I’m making an extra large version of the Nightshift Shawl by @dreareneeknits. It’s not a drapey, lightweight shawl - it’s more like a snuggly blanket to wrap myself up in on a summer night in the garden. Now the lights are getting lighter and the days are getting warmer I’ve been thinking about summer knitting and what I want to make in the coming months. Ideally I want to make some considered choices and fill some of the gaps in my wardrobe - I’m thinking of a cardigan I can wear over dresses and with jeans and also a jumper that’s more of a cropped fit. There’s something so appealing about creating something that fits my body and uses colours, textures and materials that reflect what I love and what feels nice to me. Most of my knitting so far has been accessories and this is because I shy away from garments. I’m sure some of this is rooted in my dislike of clothes shopping. I enjoy clothes but find the process of shopping for them stressful and in many ways terrible for my self esteem. I want my knitting to ask br a form of body positivity and acceptance for me. I’ve paired my knitting with a book I’ve just started - Underland by @robgmacfarlane; it has nothing to do with what I’ve spoke about but I love the journey I am taking with it. Delving into the unseen and hidden is something that appeals to me at the moment. Maybe my own personal journey is also about what lies beneath too. ME MADE MAY! Wooo - last May I was really getting into garment construction and understanding how to knit for your body when all of the sudden I came across the #memademay posts. Imagine that, a whole month to sport all your “me made” or handmade clothing. Sadly, I didn’t have any finished garments to wear but it is what inspired me to move towards knitting (and hopefully one day sewing) an entire wardrobe. . While I still don’t feel like I have enough handmade clothing for an entire wardrobe, knitting garments for myself is one of my biggest joys in life. I hope this year I can help inspire someone to start looking at their clothing and their bodies differently and cast on some “selfish knits” and work towards their own handmade wardrobe.
