I had so much fun making two shell crowns for my event Urchin Tea (which you can view at thewondersmith.com/events ) I decided to make another crown, this time a combination of the two designs! But that's not the only reason I made it. ✨✨✨ I have a confession: I sometimes get really sucked into news stories about tragedies and feel compelled to help in my own unique way, always deeply connected to heart. ✨✨✨ That's why I am working on a long-term project of making meaningful ceramic pieces for the survivors of California's Camp Fire last year, glazed with the ashes left behind. ✨✨✨ It's also why I made this crown to gift to a teenager in a local hospital who survived a terrible and traumatic event. She's been hospitalized for several months now and posted something about wanting to be well enough to go to the ocean, so I decided to bring the ocean to her. I brought my sea urchin tea set, this crown (for her to wear and keep, of course), and some healthy lunch food plus a friend to accompany me and we had a little tea party in her hospital room. I hope she enjoyed it as much as I did! ✨✨✨ Sometimes I look at the world and feel overwhelmed with the pain and suffering around me, but then I remember that even one little drop of kindness can spread in ways you'd never expect. My whole life feels like a dream sometimes, how lucky I am to be able to devote myself to kindness and wonder and craftsmanship and empathy. Viewing life through the lens of wonder makes me realize just how much beauty and magic and kindness really are out there. And that purpose is enough to keep me fighting through the worst days of my chronic illness, knowing that I want more time in this life to do the things that make my heart feel fullest. Helping others in times of pain, transition, or joy fills me up, and then I can do it again. It's a self-replenishing kind of energy, a win for everyone including me.
