Traveling Solo Sucks ⠀⠀ Sometimes. ⠀⠀ I decided six months ago to take a two-week adventure alone. People kept asking me if I was going with someone. I excitedly told them “No!” ⠀⠀ Some would respond: ⠀⠀ “Oh, good for you!” “I wish I could do that.” ⠀⠀ Others: “You’re meeting someone there?” “You’re really going through with this?” ⠀⠀ And the best yet: ⠀⠀ “You should rethink your trip.” *serious face* Why wait until someone else is ready to go, I told them. I convinced myself this was the best thing to do. As other solo female travelers do, right?! ⠀⠀ Leading up to the trip, anxiety and doubt kicked in. To not succumb to fear, I hopped on the plane. Four flights later, I was in Santorini. ⠀⠀ But, I felt isolated and alone. Ironic, since this was a solo trip. But I continued. Booked a sunset cruise and became sick. The feeling of seasickness immediately brought about homesickness. I wanted to be comforted and cuddled. As I was the ninth wheel on the boat cruise, with two couples and four friends. I too wanted a companion. ⠀⠀ So I sat, sick leaning over a barf bag, cold & alone for 5 hours watching the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea. Once on land, I realized: ⠀⠀ *If it ain’t on land or in the air, I’m not doing it. ⠀⠀ BUT, like those who go abroad for the first time, there is a rollercoaster of emotions that you’ll face when you travel. The best thing to do is FEEL them. Don’t ignore them. It’s your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong and to address it. Suppressing your culture shock, homesickness, or loneliness will only prolong the feelings. SO, ⠀⠀ ➡️Be honest with yourself, separate from other’s opinions ➡️Connect with love ones at home ➡️Enjoy the process, good and bad ⠀⠀ Have you ever regretted taking a trip, whether solo or not?
