Despite a stinking cold, taking the cat for her x-Ray having forgotten not to feed her (back to the vet tomorrow) and chickening out of a walk due to drizzle (couldn’t face 5yo’s mutiny) I did at least achieve something by finishing Milkman by Anna Burns this evening and it’s sensational. Her use of language is so playful and funny and clever and she creates such a sense of absurdity and claustrophobia. Middle sister attempts to negotiates the personal and the political - and they are never wholly separate - during the Troubles and I felt her being stifled, frustrated, terrified, menaced and isolated absolutely viscerally. It’s so dense, I couldn’t read much at one sitting but there is so much dark humour here too. I’d read another whole book about the wee sisters. ‘The day Somebody McSomebody put a gun to my breast and called me a cat and threatened to shoot me was the day the milkman died.’ • This is the opening line of Milkman, a novel by Anna Burns that happened to win a little prize called the Man Booker in 2018. Jarring, elusive and tongue in cheek, Milkman is brimming with originality. • The story is narrated by Middle sister, a teenage girl growing up in an unspecified place (probably Northern Ireland) at a vaguely specified time (sometime during the late 1970s) as she attempts to ward off the advances of the Milkman, an eery older man who seems to be watching her from around every corner. • It took me a while to adjust to the style, which is almost like stream of consciousness (going on long winding tangents) but not (you can follow it), but I did and now have gotten quite into the story. • Middle sister is a compelling heroine and although it is set during a particularly tumultuous and violent time in Irish history, the Troubles roughly 30 years ago, it resonates with the problems of today: government surveillance, sexual harassment and general paranoia and unease. Spirited and full of opinions, Middle sister is the opposite of dull and boring and it’s worth the read just for her feisty observations. • We’ll see how the rest of it goes but so far I’d highly recommend it. To me, it’s so different from the majority of books published today in terms of style and form, and I love to read novels that offer something new. • Have you read Milkman? What did you think of it?

Was anyone else convinced that the shortlist announcement for @womensprize was tomorrow night not tonight?! Just me? (For those who don’t know, it’s at a minute past midnight tonight, which I will acknowledge is technically tomorrow...). I’ve only read the pictured three from the long list, but all deserve a place on the shortlist. Lost Children Archive is a stunning, evocative novel, which reminds me of the writing of John Steinbeck. I read it in December, and I still think about it. Milkman, is unlike anything I’ve ever read. A genre bending tragi-comedy with a dystopian edge, Burns use of language is sublime. My full reviews of the above two can be found under #sarahs89readsreviews. My review of Remembered will join it tomorrow, but it’s a heartbreaking, raw novel which draws you in, investing you fully in the fate of its characters. So far I'm trying to adapt to the unusual, "impersonalized" style and am slowly getting into the story ... The novel won last year's Booker price and has been nominated for the 2019 Women's Prize for Fiction. We get our milk by a milkman. By the same one every other day. His name is Lee and he is really nice. It is also organic and we return the bottles when he brings new ones. It is also a great conversation starter as nearly everyone who visits us notices the empty glass bottles in front of our door.
