A set of tent awning arrived this afternoon and I smiled. I had wished to have this for a long time but did not think that there was no such thing for my EZ canopy, not a real kind of tent to be precise. This oak tree in my parents’ garden is what started my tree obsession. I spent my childhood playing here. My dad made us a zip wire from one of the branches and a swing from another. Every spring daffodils grow under it and my grandmother used to make my siblings and me pose for a photo in them. When she died this is where we scattered her ashes. About eight years ago, someone I know in a critique of my work let me know I was not good at collage. My work was best when I had photographs as the basis of the work, so stop trying to make work without the photographs. And by the way I did not understand color. What a slap in the face. It was pretty devastating. Fortunately, I emailed my long time mentor, telling him about this experience along with photos of the work from the critique. He let me know that this person had no idea where I am heading and a critique like that is not helpful. He told me that as a teacher his job is to look at the work and try to figure out what the student is exploring and help him or her get there in their own way. He gave me guidance on the work and let me know to not listen to that person ever again. I am so grateful for him in a moment when I could have listened to a bad critique and never reached this point in my journey. Especially because I feel I have only just scratched the surface of what I want to explore. My take away from this, be very careful who you listen to during critiques and have a solid trusted source to turn to. Photo of a second 44 x 90 inch piece in process.
