Like Tales from the Loop, Mouse Guard is an RPG that takes its theme from the work of an artist, namely David Petersen, creator of the Mouse Guard comic. This is sort of an extreme continuation of the approach begun at TSR in the 90s with Dark Sun, to let the aesthetic of the game define the world and the experience it delivers. If developing RPGs directly out of the work of artists is a new modern trend, consider me on board. ¶ The Mouse Guard RPG system is a very lite version of Luke Crane’s Burning Wheel – six-sided dice for skill checks, with four to six being a success measured against just three stats: belief, goal and instinct. These simple mechanics leave a lot of headroom for player imagination, making the game ideal for new players. ¶ And I mean, come on, look at those mice! They’re the perfect mix of cute and badass, drawing on a long literary tradition of anthropomorphic animal characters, most notably The Wind in the Willows and the Redwall books by Brian Jacques. I have a serious soft spot for this and I suspect it has led a good number of new players who might be uninterested in the standard fantasy tropes of many RPGs into the hobby. ¶ This is the second edition Mouse Guard box set, which is about a nice a modern box set as I have encountered. Included within are the rules, a rules supplement, a screen, character sheets, four sets of custom dice, four decks of player cards (with items, actions and conditions all laid out for easy reference) and more, all lavishly illustrated with Petersen’s artwork (mostly, I think, reprinted from the comics).
