One of my students once said to me, “My skin is white. You have brown skin. I like it!” I remember she went back and forth between examining her skin and mine. I thanked her and responded by saying “I like all skin colors. But most importantly I like people who are kind like you!” It is so easy to breed children who love, appreciate, and are curious about the people around them. However, in today’s society, many individuals are trying to breed hate. In an effort to spread a positive message, I had the vision to create a bulletin that is inclusive and welcoming to all. We all have the capability to recognize external and internal similarities. More importantly, we have the ability to recognize the characteristics that differentiate ourselves from the people around us. Characteristics include ethnicity, religion, gender identity and more. Being “color-blind” will not address or fix any problems. It strips the individuality, and cultural identity people strive to uphold.  Finding a way to introduce a multitude of cultures to youth appropriately and sensitively can help them understand their differences. “Multiculturalism” is not just about the inclusivity of ethnicities, races, and religions. We must stand up for youth from all backgrounds, those in the LGBTQA+ community, those with disabilities, and those who differ socioeconomically. We must create a dialogue with our youth where we acknowledge there are privileges and misfortunes among race, gender, and religion. We must fight for change. Embrace differences. Embrace each other. “The beauty in the world lies in the diversity of its people.” - Unknown Thank you to Denise and Daynalees who helped me in creating this beautiful bulletin. #iteach #multiculturaleducation #teachertribe

“From woman, man is born; without woman, there would be no one at all” this originated from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 473 females in Sikhism have been extremely important, even from the beginning of Sikhi in the 1500s. Not only were women honoured in Gurbani (Sikh prayers), but the 10 Gurus of Sikhism ensured that women’s power and abilities were known. The Gurus were determined to maintain equality in Sikhi by allowing men and women alike to practice Seva (helping others), participate in the Sangat (at the temple) and taking Amrit (wearing a turban and practicing the 5 K’s of Sikhism). I wanted to share this piece as I am a young Sikh woman - it’s interesting to see how females play a role in Sikhism and how the 10 Gurus shaped female empowerment in their own ways

Happy Canada day! Canada is truly the best country in the world and imma tell you why: because to be truly Canadian is to be a global citizen, a peace maker, a humanitarian. To be Canadian is to be proud of your ethnic heritage as Canada celebrates the differences of everyone. To be Canadian is to be proud of yourself and I am so proud to be Canadian ❤️ . And while we celebrate Canada’s independence from the British/European colonisers who have stolen these sacred lands from the natives, we respect the history and the land of the native people. I also pray for the independence of all the other nations who remain suffering. Today I was blessed to celebrate with my family and I’m so happy that my family grew to include my aunt who fled Syria and overcame so much with her family. I’m happy Canada gave her a new chance in life and today we not only celebrate Canada’s blessings but we also pray for Syria as well. Inchallah Syria will also be independent and free one day ❤️ Swipe to watch videos of how Canada celebrates multiculturalism & unity . #canadaDay #canada #happycanadaday #ottawa #canadian #unity #multicultural #multiculturalism #narcityottawa #freesyria #syria
