I love when paintings and frames intersect, further blurring the lines between art and craft. I think this frame was made specifically for this piece because 1.) The frame’s colors complement the painting’s 2.) The painting was commissioned and usually commissioned pieces that hang in private homes have frames made to match the home’s decor and/or painting 3.) There is evidence for painters creating frames for their works during this time period These are my speculations! What are yours? ____ Altarpiece showing the Holy Family, with Saint John the Baptist, a Cat, and Two Donors (c.1512-1513) by Dosso Dossi Oil on canvas Italian, first recorded 1512-1542 ____ “Nothing is documented about why this altarpiece was commissioned, but the composition provides clues about the man and woman in contemporary dress. On the right a man in black kneels on the ground, his cast shadow intersecting that of the young John the Baptist, who present him to the Holy Family. The woman, undoubtedly the man’s wife, kneels on a low wooden stool on the right side of the Virgin, a place or greater honor than that of her husband, with implies that she had died before the picture was painted. The couple’s relative positions suggest that the man had commissioned Dossi to make this painting as a memorial to his deceased wife. The cat’s theological meaning may be lost on a modern viewer, but for Dossi it would have symbolized the bestial nature of humankind that is capable of damning the soul, represented here by the bird held by the Christ child.” ____ ____ ____ #itweetmuseums #underratedframe #framefan #artstagram u#ihavethisthingwithmuseum #museumgoer #museumlover #museumblogger #museumvisit #imamusaller #museumwanderlove #muselife #welcometothemuseum #blogger #artblogger #art #artlover #renaissanceart #museum #museo

These photos do not do this frame justice. This frame was a monumental piece of sculpture, jutting out from the wall, demanding attention. Because of its depth, the painting was floating in front the wall unlike most frames where the painting is almost flush with the wall. I’m still shocked how they got the heavy thing to hang! It was balancing act, achieved by superb craftsmanship. I’m in awe of the craftsmanship and it’s made me realize that I’ve been a little too focused on frames’ relationship with paintings than the frames themselves. I want to better understand the making of a frame: what are suitable types of wood, how to carve the details without sacrificing structural integrity, seek out historic frame guilds, etc. Stay tuned for what I find out! _____ St. Paul the Hermit in Meditation (1610-mid-1611) by Jusepe de Ribera Spanish, 1591-1652 Oil on canvas _____ “This painting has been dated to the years when Ribera had just moved from his native Spain to Italy, where he was documented in Parma in mid-1611. Here the artist demonstrates familiarity with the mysterious light and shadow effects in vogue in Italy, thanks to Caravaggio’s great works of the early 1600s. Ribera spent the remainder of his career in Rome and Naples, but always retained his Spanish identity.” ____ ____ ____ #itweetmuseums #underratedframe #framefan #artstagram u#ihavethisthingwithmuseum #museumgoer #museumlover #museumblogger #museumvisit #imamusaller #museumwanderlove #muselife #welcometothemuseum

Massive thank you to @things_i_didnt_know for this shot from Alte Meister Dresden. Play curator with me! 1.) Would you keep this frame arrangement or change it and how so? 2.) What paintings would you place inside these frames? Would they relate to one another or an artistic genre? 3.) What would you try to convey or say with this wall? Comment your answer and let’s see how many creative options we can come up with! _____ _____ _____ #itweetmuseums #underratedframe #framefan #artstagram u#ihavethisthingwithmuseum #museumgoer #museumlover #museumblogger #museumvisit #imamusaller #museumwanderlove #muselife #welcometothemuseum

Up close and personal with this complementary duo. The frame’s tone matches the painting’s palette and makes Durieux’s shawl pop. The frame’s details, while ornate, manage to look rustic and pair nicely with Renoir’s scratchy brush strokes. I wonder if the gallery’s walls contribute to this harmony. Would it pair as nicely if the walls were purple? ____ Tilla Durieux [Ottilie Godeffroy, 1880-1971] (1914) by Auguste Renoir French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer Oil on canvas ____ “When Renoir painted this ambitious portrait, he was so crippled with arthritis that he had to sit in a wheelchair with his brush strapped to his hand.” ____ ____ ____ #itweetmuseums #underratedframe #framefan #artstagram u#ihavethisthingwithmuseum #museumgoer #museumlover #museumblogger #museumvisit #imamusaller #museumwanderlove #muselife #welcometothemuseum

I love it when museums and sites of historical relevance do this to me... Visiting Monte-Cristo made me think about some of the relevant questions we, as a society, should ask ourselves, including the ones on white privilege and feminism Walking through Dumas’ home from the 19th century I felt the weight of the past on my shoulders, wondering what I’d want to be remembered for.
