This was one of those classes that fell out of the normal rotation and we somehow had more time than I planned. Always good to have backup plans, right? This class really needed some more rhythm reading practice. Each of my Note Neighborhood sets comes with an "Introduction" and a "Practice" PowerPoint Presentation. You learn the concept in the "intro" and get more exposure and experience in the "practice" set. ⠀
.⠀
So, we visited the Neighborhood and ran through the "practice" powerpoint for sixteenth notes where our neighbor friends go to the food truck festival. At the end of class we pulled out white boards and tried copying down some of the rhythms we saw on the board. Students got the chance to copy the notes, write down the patterns they saw on the practice page on the screen, and then rearrange and move things around in whatever order they wanted.⠀
.⠀
What sorts of activities do you use for a backup or have handy just in case? I love using and reusing Note Neighborhood powerpoints, Interactive PDF rhythm games on the SMART board, folk dances, instrument exploration, and books! Sorry, not sorry..... =)

Somebody with little feet wasn't watching where they were going. They had ignored my instructions and made a beeline for the door so that they could be first in line. I had a flash of frustration and realized I could get angry or I could use this moment to teach. ⠀
.⠀
I stopped everyone and drew their attention to the instrument (not the boy who had knocked it over). I talked about how "someone" wasn't watching and had accidentally tripped over the glockenspiel. "I'm just so glad that that friend is safe and didn't fall and hurt themselves or the glockenspiel." We talked about what might have happened and how glad we were that it hadn't. Then in front of their eyes I fixed the bars and moved on.⠀
.⠀
If I had gotten angry or called out the boy who had done this it might have shamed him for a minute and perhaps changed his behavior, but I hope that how I handled the situation prompted the class to learn. Watch where you're going, be careful of the instruments, know that Mr. Row won't freak out.⠀

I will admit that I am a Star Wars nerd. The storyline, the costumes, the characters, the quotable dialogue, the endless possibilities.... I just love it! So, when I was creating a center resource that would get kids to practice rhythm reading and work on their arranging skills I knew that I had to use SW as a theme!⠀
.⠀
One of the things that I love about this resource is the versatility. There are several levels of difficulty and you the teacher get to choose which rhythms the kids interact with. You can leave them on basic rhythms like quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes or you can scale up to the sixteenth note patterns in endless varieties. Once the kids know how the center works you can bring it back again and again and just utilize the more difficult rhythms each time. Who doesn't love a resource that can be used multiple times!⠀
.⠀
I know not everyone is a Star Wars fan like me, so I adapted this resource and made it with a food theme, ocean theme, animal them, emoji theme, and more. If you're interested in learning more, check out my link in profile to preview the resource!⠀

I love looking back at the year and enjoying pictures like this because I can see all the progress that kids have made over the year. When these kiddos first entered my room in August they could barely sit criss-cross applesauce, let alone sing on pitch, keep a steady beat, or hold a mallet. We've got a long way to go by my gosh, look at how fare we've come!⠀
.⠀
In this picture my kindergarteners were exploring the instruments and learning valuable things we will use later. We were trying to find which bars make the highest sounds and which make the lowest sounds. We spent time talking about and trying to walk up to the right instruments (procedures of how you get to and walk away from the instruments). We kept a steady beat using mallets on two different bars. We covered a LOT!⠀
.⠀
I'm going to miss moments like this! While I love the summer for free time to explore my other interests, recharge, drink iced coffee, and go to training, I do miss the kids. There's just something so exciting and energizing about making music with kids that brings me back over and over again.
