Just enjoying some tea from @thehouseoflifeclinic ✨ I drink the Himalayan Sunrise in the morning to help with digestion and the Sweet Surrender at night to help me relax and get a good nights sleep. These teas are so incredible and have helped some conditions I’ve been struggling with recently. They are made with natural and herbal ingredients which have been sourced from their country of origin. Thank you so much Maria for looking after me and helping me heal naturally!

B U R N ☽ O U T Burn out was recognized as an official medical diagnosis by the World Health Organization last month. This speaks volumes about the state of our health under incessant pressure to perform like machines. I seem to dance with burnout about once a season. In fact, I messaged that exact sentence to colleague and burn-out expert @cait_donovan this week. Burn-out symptoms vary from person to person but often are marked by fatigue that isn’t relieved by adequate sleep, lack of motivation and creativity, irritability, resentment, reduced stress tolerance (little things are causing you to fly off the handle or cry), difficulty concentrating and an uptick in coping behaviors like emotional eating, social media scrolling, substance use, etc. It’s a sense that a day-off is barely a drop in your empty bucket. When I first notice the symptoms I typically beat myself up for being “off” and try to will myself to snap out of it before I recognize what’s happening, though I’m getting better at catching it sooner. What you need to cope with burnout is going to be unique to you. For me, the ultimate antidote to early stages of burnout is a solo weekend outside. I need lots of fresh air, a natural body of water, sunshine, and time off from taking care of anyone but myself (that last piece is critical). This past weekend was exactly that. If I do this every 8 weeks or so I can avoid needing more drastic interventions. Have you burnt out before? What helps you? from my weekend- sunshine, fresh air, body of water, solo time.

E X P A N D I N G☽ C A P A C I T Y You want more joy, more happiness, more pleasure in your life. Who doesn’t? We can do things to expand our capacity to feel these emotions, but there’s a catch. Your ability to feel pleasure is directly proportionate to your ability to feel anything. What you allow yourself to feel in ALL emotions dictates your capacity for pleasure. Your ability to feel rage or grief is proportionate to your ability to feel joy. You can’t selectively sensitize yourself. Think about an intense depression where you can’t access joy...you’re not feeling much of anything. You’re shut down. It feels like being numb. In contrast, deep grief is often interrupted by moments of profound joy or gratitude. In Chinese medicine this is the difference between good flow of Qi (energy) and stagnation. When we resist emotions we create stagnation and over time this leads to depression. Depression is disconnection from self; stagnant energy that creates blocks in our ability to feel. I’ve spent time at both extremes— being very shut down and being incredibly open. At my most open, I was feeling a lot but I didn’t have a container for it. It felt messy and destructive. I was being dragged by my emotions and dumping them onto everyone around me. I knew it wasn’t working, so I shut down and tried not to feel. Not coincidentally, many years of chronic illness followed. Through meditation, acupuncture, therapy, and other embodiment practices I’ve created an emotional container for myself and have been opening back up to feeling deeply again. This meant months of feeling years worth of grief, rage, anxiety, and everything else I repressed. But it’s worth it. Some fun side effects: moments of overwhelming gratitude, waves of spontaneous joy, best sex of my life, and an acute awareness of when I’m feeling disconnected so I can do something about it. It’s natural to want to protect yourself from pain, but you’re doing it at the expense of pleasure.

Do you use store bought hand soaps? I used to use Method foaming hand soap in all of these fabulous “scents”. It's marketed as a "safer alternative" right? We know the skin is the largest organ in our bodies. Everything that we apply on our hands, feet, face and our bodies get absorbed through our skin. I kept the bottle to make my own so the ingredient sticker is still on it. ⠀⠀ Would you rather go to Ewg.org and type in each chemical in your hand soap and figure out what the heck it is? Or use these 5 items to make your own, toxin free, carcinogen free soap? Instead of the factory produced perfume scents I add a few drops of the real essential oil instead! Make your own too! Ingredients: 1/2 cup castile soap liquid 1/2 cup distilled water 1 TB vitamin E oil (optional) 1 TB sweet almond oil or olive oil or jojoba oil (optional) 15 drops tea tree essential oil 5-10 drops lavender essential oil . . . . . ⠀⠀ #knowledgeispower #advocateforyou #dailymotherhood #oilymom #oilymama #myhealthy #essentialoils101 #motherhoodinspired #protectyourbabies #unitedmotherhood #modernmom #millenialmom #momsquad #toxinfreehome #momsofinstagram #naturalchoices #momblogger #chemicalfreehome #naturalmom #naturalhealthcare #howtoessentialoils #homeopath #familywellness #healthyinspo #momvibes #wellnesslifestyle #momapproved #easydiy #younglivingessentialoils #thisismotherhood

T H E ☽ V A G U S ☽ N E R V E I offer a unique treatment in my office that stimulates vagal nerve function. This nerve is the command center of your parasympathetic nervous system and controls your ability to relax and recover from stress. You can strengthen it like a muscle. Weak vagal nerve tone is linked to inflammation, depression, loneliness and heart attacks. Some of the amazing functions of the vagus nerve: Connects Gut to Brain Emotionally: Your vagus nerve in your GI tract sends messages to your brain. That “gut feeling” is a very real phenomenon. Innate anxiety and learned fearis regulated by signals from the gut. Helps with Memory: Studies have shown that stimulating the vagus nerve helps strengthen and consolidate memories. Reduces Inflammation: Incredible research by neurosurgeon Kevin Tracey demonstrated that nerve stimulation by electrical implants caused a drastic reduction in symptoms and even remission in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Similar studies have been done showing dramatic improvement in a number of inflammatory responses and diseases throughout the body. Relaxation Response: The vagus nerve tells the body to calm down by releasing acetylcholine. This chemical prompts a number of other chemicals like oxytocin, vasopressin, and prolactin to be secreted. As a result: heart rate slows down, breathing calms, you feel more able to bond and connect with others, digestion is stimulated, and muscles relax. Breathing and Heart Rate: The vagus nerve controls your heart rate via electrical impulses and tells your lungs to breathe through acetylcholine secretion. Local? I’m accepting new patients in June. Book via link in bio for acupuncture that treats vagal nerve tone. PC @alexisahrling

Ain't that the truth! Healthcare has us all messed up. Instead of doctors prescribing meds they should figure out the root cause of the illness and educate their patients on believing that their body has the capability to heal itself, along with feeding your body with healthy nutritious food. #alkaline #alkalinediet #plantbased #glutenfree #veganlife #foodismedicine #veganeats #healthy #grateful #awakening #foodie  #healthylifestyle #celiacdisease #mineral #alkalize #nutrition #detoxify #cleanseyourbody  #cleanse #healthy #herbalist #naturalhealthcare #naturalhealing #plantmedicine #planthealing #plantmagic  #healingherbs #medicinalherbs

T H E ☽ U N K N O W N Sometimes it feels as though the entire purpose of life is getting comfortable with the unknown. All our anxieties are attempts at filling in the blank. We want to know. We yearn for certainty so badly that we rehearse for tragedy in the face of a wide open future. We catastrophize in a misguided attempt to prepare for the worst. Joy and happiness are subject to the same uncertainty as every other emotion and knowing their fleeting nature, we can hardly enjoy them when they arise. In every high we are tempted to envision the next low. We wait for the other shoe to drop. We allow fear of the unknown to steal the nectar from the present moment. One of the most beautiful results of my meditation practice has been an expanded tolerance of the unknown. I don’t know when exactly it happened, but I woke up this morning and realized I don’t rehearse for tragedy anymore. I don’t catastrophize. Certainly, I still experience anxiety, but it’s different now, tamer. And not surprisingly, there is markedly less drama in my life now that my thoughts aren’t conjuring it up in every peaceful moment. I can breathe in the ecstasy of a perfect summer day and not feel angst that summer will be over soon on the very same exhale. Relishing the beauty in life without the shadow of the unknown tainting each of those moments with anxiety has been the best gift I could have asked for from this practice. JGD ✨
