I was always told by my professors that becoming a wedding photographer was selling out. That people shoot weddings to pay the bills so they can fund their “real art.” That nobody actually wants to be a wedding photographer. That it’s not creative. That it’s not art. That it’s not commercial nor photojournalism. That the ONLY reason it is hard is because you have to be on your feet for long days. That anyone can do it. That it’s just the work photographers have to do to get by. — Can I just take a sec to debunk that bullshit? Wedding photography is wildly important. You don’t need anybody else to validate that for you. It’s hard for more reasons than just being on your feet. It IS creative having to show up to a new location with new decor, new lighting, new vendors, 150+ new guests, and unpredictable weather to boot and make that shit look GOOD. Not just good but DAMN good. Week after week. It is commercial AND photojournalism if you’re capturing the true and real moments of the day. And by no means does one or the other make it more or less of an art. And whether it’s art or not, who cares?! These are images that will be cherished for generations and that holds way more meaning in my heart than a canvas splatter painted blue hanging in the MoMa. ‍♀️ Because that’s “art.” — All I know is if I did this job just for the money, I would hate my friggen life. It’s exhausting, it’s hard, it’s late nights and comparisons and constant growth and endlessly and wholeheartedly caring deeply about others. And I wouldn’t change it for a thing. I do this for the genuine relationships I have with my couples. I do this for my own creativity whether that is art school approved or not (hint: it’s not). I do this to bring people joy and tangible memories and something to look back on with their grandchildren. I do this to help build confidence and self love in someone who may have lost sight of their worth. I do this to document the milestones and all of the ministones in life. No amount of money comes close to the feeling of giving someone something they will value forever. — Sound familiar?
