They say a picture is worth a thousand words so every picture tells a story… So here we go… captured this at Oaxaca City – Oaxaca, Mexico during a Calenda. Las Calendas are a fundamental part of Oaxacan celebrations. Simply, almost all festivities in Oaxaca begin with a Calenda which are parades through the main streets of the city. They are a way of announcing that a celebration is about to begin and an invitation for the community to take part in the festivities. It is a celebration in and of itself. The capture has several components. In the foreground is Oaxaqueña performing a quema de torito (burning of a bull dance), in the middle ground are monos de calenda / gigantes which are an integral part of a Calenda, and in the background is el Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman La quema de torito is dancing with fireworks. Toritos (little bulls) are figures made of different materials that have fireworks on them. The figure is carried on the head of a person who swings the torito wildly while the fireworks are light which makes the toritos spit fire and creates streams of flashes and sparkles. In the image the women is covering herself to minimize her burns and so must observers. Calenda dolls are hollowed giant puppets. During the festivities they are usually carried by a youth which makes them dance to the rhythm of the music usually making them swing their big arms around. The Santo Domingo de Guzman Church is without a doubt the most famous church in Oaxaca. Built in Baroque style the complex construction began in 1575 and it took over two centuries to build. It showcases a finely carved façade and Its hyper-ornate interior in 3D relief features 17th century decorations which included the use of more than 60,000 sheets of 23.5 karat gold leaf.
