We have planted about 1000 onions so far......lol needless to say David is dreading planting these that we have in the greenhouse. Most of what we have left is leeks to put in the ground. After last years success using seedling onions instead of sets in our climate we are converted. I started a bunch and ordered some as well David has threatened to toss the rest lol as we plant them into little holes in landscape fabric so it is pretty tedious. While I’m not lucky enough to have a space to plant onions, I enjoyed learning about them . A farm that plants onions for sale would have started growing from seed indoors during the winter. Then plant onion seedlings into the ground early spring, even when there’s still snow. But it’s not too late- you just might not get as good yield . I found it interesting that one would decide how deep to plant the seedlings based on the type. 1 inch for cipollini onions, 2 inches for Dutch shallots & 2-3 inches for tropea onions .
