Smiling because the first year of optometry school is completed and now 1/4th part doctor. All I can say was that it was stressful but the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to become a bit more clear. #optometry #optometrystudent #cco #chicago #opto #year1done #helloyear2 #chicagocollegeofoptometry #downersgrove #1/4doctor #vsco #vscocam #chicagogram #student #optometristinthemaking #optometrist #instagood
RESEARCH .
.
.
In undergrad, I always thought of research as boring lab work. Something tedious and time consuming. I did a short summer internship working with mathematical concepts for prostate cancer. It wasn’t anything I was passionate about, and I didn’t feel as though I was contributing much.
.
.
Going into optometry school, I thought I’d give it another shot. Last summer, I ended up being selected for the T-35 program with an amazing professor. I was able to do clinical work, and fully understand the work I was doing. Having myopia control as my interest, she found the perfect project. This has opened up so many doors, as I am able to pursue a Masters in conjunction to my optometry degree. In addition, I will be giving a talk at ARVO on my current project in Vancouver in a couple weeks.
.
.
Becoming an optometrist, there are so many modalities of work that we are able to do. Coming out of school you may think you’ll work in a practice for the rest of your life. But there is R&D, teaching, consulting, industry work that is out there too. You can even help other companies conduct research on their new products all while practicing in your office. Doing research definitely helps to open these avenues.
.
.
It’s exciting to keep up with the new technology coming out so rapidly. Being in research definitely helps to keep you updated with the latest news. Plus, with the numerous optometrists, why not try to do something a little different?

Aside from completely dodging the Midwest polar vortex , choosing to go to optometry school out of state and away from home was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my growth. The people I’m meeting and learning from make it all worth while!
Recently though, I’ve been so caught up with schedules and being on the go that I’ve neglected visiting home (momma made it known), so after these finals I’m going home to visit the support system that’s the reason why I’m here in the first place. Can’t wait!
TLDR: Don’t forget your support system while you’re out there doing big things. Midwest peeps, let’s hang!

Officially took the last final of 2nd year, marking the half way point in this crazy journey to be an OD ! I couldn’t have done it without my mentor for constantly dealing with my stressful vents and curious/annoying questions about classes, clinic, life, and everything in between.
& to my mentor:
I can’t believe you’re about to take on your last year moving to different cities to complete your externships. I’m going to miss seeing your beautiful face around, but before you know it, you’ll be coming back and walking across the stage to be a doctor! You’re going to be amazing, miss you already, and don’t worry I’ll still be bothering you
ARVO ✔️.
.
.
ARVO is an international conference for ophthalmologists, vision scientists, and optometrists. Though optometrists are the minority at this conference, I was blessed with the opportunity to give a talk my current research project this year.
.
.
It was so surreal to me that I was able to present in the same session as one of my professors. Also knowing so many big myopia control names were attending the session, I was very nervous. Plus it was my first time presenting any research and my first conference since beginning optometry school.
.
.
I am so thankful to my research professor for pushing me to put myself out there and helping me with my whole presentation. And to the other 3 girls who also presented at the conference for being each other hype men. And thanks to UH for the Cullen Travel Grant.
.
.
As they all say, optometry is a small network of people. It’s been a blessing sharing my research and learning from the best in the field.
.
.
Can’t wait for the next conference!

CHOOSING SCHOOLS
.
.
Fun fact: I was 100% confident in attending Berkeley after admit day (hence my Berkeley gear). But after coming home to Chicago, I chose UHCO on the final decision day.
.
.
I applied to 5 schools: ICO, SCCO, UHCO, CCO, and UCB.
My interview process began in November and lasted until April.
Every time you receive an acceptance, the school gives you usually 2-4 weeks to accept their offer. By accepting the offer, you must send them a deposit to accept your position.
Every time I was given an acceptance an offer, I felt anxiety to choose whether or not I should accept since my interviews were scattered through out the year.
However, most schools will allow you to ask for an extension so don’t be afraid to ask!
.
.
How did I chose the right school for me out of the 5 schools?
I looked at schools that offered what I was looking for. Being interested in myopia control, my top 2 schools were UHCO and UCB. They both had myopia control clinics and were heavily involved in research. I ultimately ended up choosing UHCO since they offered a duo OD/MS program. In addition, I wanted a bit more flexibility in my schedule. **Be sure to ask about exam/clinic schedules for each school!
.
.
I believe most of the optometry schools will prepare you to be a great optometrist. After all, you get what you end up putting into school. I ended up loving the teachers and classmates here at UHCO. I don’t regret my decision at all, and hope you find your perfect match.
