Victoria crater on Mars. It is an impact crater, approximately 800 meters in diameter, located at Meridiani Planum near the planet's equator. This image (pic 1) taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera onboard the NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on 3 Oct. 2006, shows a distinctive scalloped shape to its rim, caused by erosion and downhill movement of crater wall material. Layered sedimentary rocks are exposed along the inner wall of the crater, and boulders that have fallen from the crater wall are visible on the crater floor. The floor of the crater is occupied by a striking field of sand dunes.  The Mars Exploration Rover 'Opportunity' was operating at Meridiani Planum since January 2004. Five days before this image (pic 1) was taken, Opportunity arrived at the rim of Victoria crater, after a drive of more than 9 kilometers and took the magnificent panoramic image seen at pictures 2-6 (swipe). On January 28, 1986, the NASA shuttle orbitermission STS-51-L and the tenth flight of Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-99) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight. It broke apart because one of the solid rocket boosters failed because the O-ring's were not made for extreme conditons that existed at the launch. Crew escape was not possible. During Space Shuttle's development, a crew escape system was concidered, but NASA came to the conclusion that the shuttle's expected high reliability would preclude the need for one. A different perspective: What appears to be an ocean on Earth are desolate dunes of #Mars. This image was acquired on Jan. 2, 2014, by @NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Dune fields located among canyon wall slopes are also known as "wall dune fields" and are further identified as either climbing or falling. Falling dunes are defined as large bedforms with lee faces on the downhill side-indicating that this is the direction of their migration-and on moderate slopes greater than 10 to 12 degrees. (A lee face is the the downwind side of a dune.) On Earth and Mars, these types of dunes are largely controlled by what is called "microtopography." Physical obstacles can accelerate and decelerate airflow, create turbulence, potentially enhancing erosion, deposition, and/or transport of dune sediment. This class of dune morphology is relatively rare across Mars. However, falling dunesand climbing fields are frequently located among the spur-and-gully walls in the Melas and Coprates chasmata. Here is one example, of active falling dunes on this large massif in east Coprates Chasma. #NASA #JPL #NASAJPL #MRO #planet #redplanet #space #orbiter #orbit #Martian #landscape : @UAHiRise
