Today’s Inspiration: Paco Rabanne Rabanne’s mother was head seamstress for Balenciaga; his pedigree in the fashion world was never in question, even though he famously declared that “sewing is bondage” and produced apparel that was held together with wire, rings, and glue. He even sold DIY kits at one point which contained the bits and pieces a person would need to make their own versions of his designs. This kit caused critical controversy, and Coco Chanel famously dismissed him as “that metallurgist”. Born Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo, the Basque/Spanish designer was born in 1934 and worked under the name Paco Rabanne. His family fled the fascist regime in Spain, he grew up in France. Rabanne released his fist collection (called 12 Unwearable Dresses, and how can you NOT love a title like that?) in 1966, this collection included his first plastic dress. He was one of the first designers to use music to set the mood of a runway show. He hired models of color before it was a normal thing to do. Rabanne’s career began almost immediately after architecture school, his first jobs in fashion were designing ostentatious costume jewelry for labels like Nina Ricci, Maggy Rouff and Givenchy. Peggy Guggenheim was one of his most faithful (and first!) clients, and he also designed for Françoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn, Mylène Farmer & Elizabeth Taylor. Rabanne was an artist- he loved experimenting with unconventional materials- his creations were made of metal, plastic, tape, paper, and his favorite, rhodoid (an incombustible thermoplastic). One of his most famous designs was the green costume Jane Fonda wore in Barbarella. His career continued until his retirement in 1999, though the brand continues on to this day.
