Stadio Palatino, Domus Augustana, Roma.
Palatine Stadium, Domus Augustana, Rome.
The Domus Augustana stands on the Palatine hill and sanctions a break with the traditional concept of imperial residence, marking the birth of the real dynastic palace. The building, designed by architect Rabirio and inaugurated by Domitian, in 92 AD, consisted of a private area, a representative wing and the Palatine Stadium to the south-west. The latter was a circus-shaped building, with a very long rectangle and one of the two smaller sides was curved. The perimeter was decorated by a two-storey portico, composed at a lower level by brick pillars covered with marble and at the upper level by marble columns. At the center of the eastern side was the imperial tribune formed by a semicircular exedra, surrounded by a two-storey corridor on the upper level of the portico.

A few remaining columns from the Temple of Vesta (foreground) with the towering remains of the Temple of Castor and Pollux (background) in the Roman Forum. A photo I took last October as the golden orb of the sun slipped behind the Palatine Hill. -
The Temple of Vesta consisted of twenty Corinthian columns built on a podium fifteen meters in diameter. The roof probably had a vent at the apex to allow smoke release as the sacred flame within the cella was kept constantly lit. The temple was one of the earliest structures in the Roman Forum (although it was rebuilt several times) and it was originally surrounded by a Sacred Grove. The temple was the storehouse for the legal wills and documents of Roman Senators and also “cult objects”. -
The first destruction of the temple was by the Gauls in 390 BCE. According to Ovid, the second time was in 241 BCE; after fire destroyed much of Vesta's temple. Fires occurred again in 210 BCE and again in the early first century BCE; however, the building was safe. It was rebuilt again during the reigns of Augustus and Nero. Finally, it burnt down in 191 CE and was later built for the last time during the reign of Septimius Severus.
The Temple of Vesta remained reasonably intact until the Renaissance. However, in 1549, the building was completely demolished and its marble reused in churches and papal palaces. The section standing today was reconstructed in the 1930s by Benito Mussolini. •
The Temple of Castor and Pollux, in the background, was originally built in gratitude for victory at the Battle of Lake Regillus (495 BC). Castor and Pollux were the Dioscuri, the "twins" of Gemini, the twin sons of Zeus (Jupiter) and Leda.
