The opioid crisis that faces this country today is out of hand. Me on the career path of becoming a surgeon and having the ability to prescribe one of these high rated opioids such as Norco, Percocet, Morphine, etc. is scary because I could potentially be my patients first drug dealer. However, after working in the pharmacy and looking into alternative ways to help heal a patient, there are ways to avoid opioids other than just in a hurry to throw them at patients. As a future physician and a current pharmacy technician I see what opioids does to people and how it can alternate their normal behavior if they are not on either medications. I feel physicians even in their busy schedules need to make it a habit to follow-up with patients who is taking them for either acute or chronic conditions, look into all alternatives other than going straight for an opioid, and lastly if the patient has to take it come up with a plan of action to prevent overdose and/or addiction to the medication. we as future or current healthcare providers should always figure out ALL possible ways to effectively heal a patient. #futuresurgeon #blackdoctors #futuredoctor #patientcomesfirst

Anyway, I love getting daily updates on how my patients Botox is settling in. . . . First photo is what my patient texted me as a consult photo. Basically “I have a wedding coming up please fix these!!!” Before getting Botox, I explain to my patients that Botox simply paralyzes the muscle that caused these wrinkles allowing them to not get deeper and soften over time. That being said, crows feet are highly dynamic wrinkles meaning the depth and degree of wrinkling gets worse with movement. With Botox treatment of the crows feet, the patient will still have fine lines that have been there for many years. These will fade and soften over time, but for an event like a wedding where you will be smiling a lot and in photos, this treatment was very successful as shown on the right. . . . It is very important to explain to your patient the way Botox works so they do not have unrealistic expectations. Before they spend money and time on treatments, understand their expectations. This is a foreign object in our body that is slowly shredding our kidneys from the inside out and we will live with that for the rest of our lives. We live with pain every day, so when we come to you and say our pain is worse, it would be great if you would try and understand we know our bodies and we know when it is going wrong. Just because you can’t see it in imaging at that time, does not mean we are faking. We have had nothing show up and then pass stones a few hours or days later. All of us have a long medical files dating back that shows our chronic history. The evidence is in the file you just have to take the time to read it. I am sure new treatments are out there but it would help if professionals would be willing to listen to us.
