Does your toddler need more calories? ‍♀️ Try adding more of these foods into the diet. 1️⃣ Avocado is great cut into cubes, sliced into fingers for #babyledweaning, or added into smoothies, dips and pasta sauces. 2️⃣ Smoothies are a great place to pack in nutrient-rich calories. Try using nut butters, seeds, fruit, avocado and/or canned coconut milk. 3️⃣ Chia seed pudding is one of our favorite healthy fat snacks for kids. We have a recipe for our lemon one a few posts back though any liquid in a ratio of of 1:4 will work. 4️⃣ Energy bites! We have a quinoa energy bar in our First Bites book for 6 months + (link in profile) and shared the recipe for these hemp energy balls in our IGTV. 5️⃣ As you can already see nut butters are a great source of calories and healthy fats for babies, toddlers and kids. In addition to the ideas listed here, we’ve shared several recipes using nut butter in previous posts. 6️⃣ Pasta is another great source of calories, especially when paired with sauce. We offer both regular, whole-wheat and legume-based pastas. ————————————————————————- Plant-based diets in tend to be lower in calories and therefore some babes might need to be offered more calorically-dense foods. In general, we are less focused on portion sizes and weight averages and much more focused on each child’s growth curve. Every child is different in how much food they need and their activity levels. Relying on growth charts is a better indicator to determine if weight is a concern. ————————————————————————- #plantbasedjuniors #toddlermeals #dietitian #dietitiansofinstagram #nutrition #healthytoddlerfood #blw #healthykids #plantbasedkids #plantbasedmom

Travis Birthday Boy! ❤️ Little story about yesterday fun seeking: We went with the kids to have a ride at the amusement park. Maya from the start chose this crazy “Booster” which I wouldn’t even want to go. I love rollercoasters and going up&down but I’m not so much up for a spin! And she looooved it! Then the boys could not decide what they want, but finally chose some dinosaur ride and both of them left so unhappy and crying, cuz it was too creepy! Lesson learned - I told them that this way we learn what we don’t like and it’s nobody’s fault that we made this kind of choice. They sort of accepted... Anyway, we called it quits and went to make some big bubbles at the fountain, very popular place in downtown. at the end we sweetened it all up with some pretty good vegan ice cream - the boys chose mango and Maya went for pistachio flavor. These are made with olive oil, so definitely it’s not an everyday snack. We still prefer our unlimited banana ice cream, but when you’re on the go, you’ve got to make it work as best as you can. At the end everyone was happy, we all got some quality sunshine time and together time. Have a wonderful Sunday y’all! #rawvegankids #rawveganfamily #plantbasedkids #veganicecream #birthdayboy #happybirthdaytravis #happyfamilymoments

What Vander ate! A recap of what my 21-month old son eats in a day. As a reminder these post aren’t for comparison, but to share what a #predominantlyplantbased approach looks like in our home. Remember that babes appetites change day by day and meal by meal. —————————————————————————- 1️⃣ Breakfast @ 730AM. Bowl of dry O cereal from @wholefoods, blueberries and a glass of fortified soy milk! This was after a banana and his @nordicnaturals DHA drops & @renzosvitamins multivitamin at 6AM when he woke up. 2️⃣ Lunch @ 11AM: Black beans, Pad Thai (leftover from last nights dinner) and steamed broccoli/cauliflower. I didn’t think he would want the pad Thai, so I gave him extra beans & veggies. He loved it!? ‍♀️ Ate most of the pad Thai and the veggies, didn’t touch the beans. 3️⃣ Snack @ 330PM: Strawberries and veggie meatballs from @ikeausa. Ate 2 meatballs and all the berries. 4️⃣ Dinner @ 6PM: Black & Pinto Beans, Sautéed Peppers with Tofu, Avocado, Sweet Potato sticks. My husband and I had burrito salads with these toppings and V got a deconstructed version. Ate two sweet potatoes, all of the avocado, a bite of the peppers and all of the beans. 5️⃣ Dessert @ 730PM: I’m guilty of keeping him up too late in the summer! We split this bowl of cherries before bed along with a small glass of milk. We are LOVING cherry season right now! My kitchen might look like a crime scene after I pit them, but it’s worth it. —————————————————————————- Your turn! Ren in the background . Toys is the one thing I have always been minimal about. I guess you could say it was the start of our minimalism journey. I read all about deep play while pregnant with Revelynne and I really wanted to help my kids master that skill! I won’t deny that I have let my want to “spoil” my kids get in the way occasionally though. I felt like my girls “needed” things because maybe I had it as a kid, or because “every little girls loves these!” But that’s just consumerism talking. . Back in the winter we purchased calico critters for the girls from a kids consignment sale. They played with them every single day. So one would assume it was a great purchase, right? Wrong. Sure they played with them. But when it was time to clean up, one or both of them would have a meltdown about how it was too much work to clean up. Finally, two weekends ago we made the decision to pack them up. I was expecting kick back when they saw them gone. I braced for it. Revelynne asked where they were. I told her we have them still, but they’re packed away for when they’re a bit older. And that was that. Clean up time in the play room is no longer a big fight and they haven’t even asked for them! REPEAT. They have not even asked for them!!! . Sometimes even what your kids “play with regularly” isn’t serving them in a good way. And sometimes it’s not worth your own sanity as a parent. Do not give up your sanity for the sake of a TOY. . “But I love spoiling my kids. To each their own!” “Your poor kids. They’re going to be so sad when they realize other kids have so much more.” “Minimalism is just a way of being cheap.” These are comments left from people who are ruled by consumerism and they don’t even know it. I am mad. Not at them, but at society. For making them think that this type of thought process is what’s “right”. That our kids must have toy rooms chalk full of options that rival a preschools. . Less toys = less cleaning up. Less toys = more focused and intentional play. Less toys = more interest in other things like drawing, learning real life skills like cooking, and playing outside. Less toys = more family time. . That is what should be the norm.
