How were you supported after birth? Did you have your family with you? Was your husband able to stay with you long before going back to work? Did you have a postpartum doula?
.
Postpartum support is so important. A new mother needs the support of close friends and family to lead a happy and more confident early parenting experience. This can be achieved through consistently checking up on the new mom, phonecalls, visits, offering to cook meals, take care of other children (if present), watch the baby while mom naps or showers...
.
As birth and postpartum doulas in the UAE, we see that many moms need this after birth support, as often they feel isolated and alone on this journey. We can help. Reach out ❤️

I know what it’s like to doubt yourself. I know what it’s like to struggle with sleep and breastfeeding and anxiety and finding any semblance of your old identity. I know what it feels like to have FOMO even though you’ve just got what you always wanted. I know what it’s like to be humbled by a baby who doesn’t want to fit into the idea you and the books had for her.
.
I know how a kind listening ear, good nourishing food and help around the house can mean the world in those early days.
.
And I know that you can, and will, get through it.
.
I’ve been there. I get it. And I can help
This is a pic of Sean, Acacia and I in those early first hazy days of our newfound parenting gig. Only 4-5weeks postpartum, an amazing friend Shannon @adventuresofcozyrosie came from interstate to stay for a week. She brushed my hair, massaged my feet, made me cuppas... an absolute golden angel to say the least! While Shan was there she also took some awesome pics. Nothing polished and posed, but authentic and real. I especially love this one because it really sums up our joy, confusion & naivety. We lived with Sean’s parents so I had more physical support than most. Don’t get me wrong I’d had a few challenges to this point, sore as hell nipples for the first 2 weeks due to listening to poor and conflicting breastfeeding advice, a freakin intense labour and emergency c-section. However we were still so oblivious to the onslaught of sleeplessness ahead, the relationship challenges and for me, total loss of identity. I know I’m not alone and so many new families live through this. However I didn’t then & I really wish I had have had more realistic expectations & even more support in my physical and emotional recovery. I wish I had have reached out more, gone to those playgroups earlier, messaged my friends more. But I felt so dazed and confused I didn’t really know where to start. I felt like all of my ability to have any type of meaningful conversation or coherent thoughts had disappeared. Would I ever feel like me again? Yes & No. I was being rewired, reborn & crossing the threshold into the new me. Fast forward to now and having experienced a second postpartum - a story for another time - I feel so thankful for the blessings of my children and also the challenges to give me insight, empathy and compassion for such an important and vulnerable life transition. I’ve learnt so much from my own experience, from various cultures and looking to the history of my own lineage. It seems all paths were leading me to this work. I look forward to walking alongside more new Mamas and families to revitalise postpartum care culture. If you’re feeling any sort of yes to this, I’d love to hear of your experience, the good, the cray cray, the learning and healing.
Hi! This is us! Sophie and Jo and our little team of supporters! We've had lots of new followers since we launched 4 months ago so we thought we'd reintroduce ourselves!
.
✨RANDOM FACTS ABOUT SOPHIE AND JO✨
.
We both love herbal tea. Between us we have a bigger selection of @pukkaherbs than most supermarkets
.
We both went to the same university, did the same degree, at almost the same time… but never met!
.
Jo is a vegetarian and doesn't like reality tv. Sophie is definitely not a vegetarian and loves Strictly Come Dancing and Love Island
.
Between us we have 3 girls who are 3, 2 and 1! They all look a lot older than in this photo (taken in Sept). I still doubt we'd be able to get them all to look at the camera now though!
.
If you can’t remember who is who, we always seem to stand with Sophie on the left and Jo on the right… in photos and in life! We also always refer to ourselves as Sophie and Jo... Never Jo and Sophie ♀️
.
We both agree that chocolate should definitely *not* be kept in the fridge. Our husbands disagree with us!
Do you agree with us or them?!
When I first started training doulas in Leeds someone said to me “aren’t you worried that that means more competition for your own doula business?” I honestly never thought of it this way, I really believe that the families we work with are so individual that it would be impossible to be the right doula for everyone. Every pregnant woman is different and needs different things from a doula. We need doulas who are as unique and as individual as the families we work with. I really feel that there is a growing doula community where I live now, much more so than when I started and it’s a lovely feeling. The more doulas there are, the more choice women have and this means the more positive birth experiences for families. It is so important that women have that 1-1 support during birth and beyond.
I am not the doula for everyone and that’s okay ❤️❤️❤️ the next Red Tent Doula training in Leeds is 7-9 June at We Are Wellness, and it’s going to be awesome. For further information or an informal chat please pm me.

Hands free postpartum. I could talk about baby wearing all day, so if there’s something you want to know - hit me up! The world of carriers can be pretty daunting, but I have *quite* a variety for you to try on before you commit to purchase. Ring slings (pictured) are easy to throw into your bag and once you get the hang of it really easy to get baby in and sitting properly. Baby wearing is something I will talk about A LOT if we do the postpartum doula tango - it’s my favourite way to connect with baby, meet their needs AND meet some of yours too (like eating with 2 hands ). If you want to know more about my postpartum doula services, send me a line hello@earthsideperth.com.au #postpartum #fourthtrimester #babywearing
