As you know if you follow my stories last weekend goats got into my main garden and ate everything, with the exception of the pig weed and a few basil plants. I have to admit I may have cried. But, luckily, it is still early enough in the season to replant almost everything, and that’s what I have been doing all week.
.
I just want to share that this wasn’t my first big garden fail/loss. Not everything goes right every year. We don’t use chemicals so there are pests to deal with. Weather can be a foe. This year it is goats and my toddler, other years it has been squash bugs or hail or horn worms or late freezes or deer or cabbage moths, but every single year there are big wins too. The goats got this garden, but I can replant and my kitchen garden and the beds we added for our daughters gardens are safe, the beans are starting to climb up the teepees, and the potato patch is doing great. So I wanted to put this out there for anyone who is on the fence about growing things, because they think they might not do it right. Here is a secret: I have done so many things wrong! But in the almost 10 years I have been growing food I have learned so much. I learn a few new tricks and add a few new crops every year. So just grow the things! It is incredibly rewarding and empowering.
.
And if you are thinking about getting livestock, try sheep. They never give us any trouble.

Oh hay there ♀️ The last week of rain has been lapped up by the courgette plants! They are steaming ahead
I'm not a massive fan of courgettes but I enjoy growing them. Does anyone else grow food and not eat it? ♀️
I give unwanted plants and harvest to friends, family, plot neighbours or our chickens

One year later: it’s a productive urban mini farm, it’s a four-season space of lush evergreens and blooming perennials ... and we all now have a year of wonderful friendship and laughter to show for it too. ❤️ (this great shot by my epically fabulous and always funny partner in making this vision come into reality @roddyvonseldeneck ) So grateful for every moment of love and creativity here ... ☺️☺️☺️
