After seeing a velvet scrunchie for £90 (wtf!?) online the other day I decided to have a go at making my own one this weekend with velvet fabric I had left over from making a headband earlier this year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Each video shows the steps for the easiest sewing project for which all you need is a little fabric, a piece of elastic which when stretched ends up as circumference you want your hair tie, a needle, thread, scissors and a safety pin. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The steps in each video are: 1. Cut a strip of fabric. 2. Fold the fabric in half ways lengthways with the right sides of the fabric together. Hand stitch the long length. 3. Turn the tube of fabric inside out so the scrunchie is now right side up. 4. Attach the safety pin to the end of the elastic and thread through. 5. Stitch together the two ends of the elastic. Fold the raw edges of the scrunchie in and stitch together. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Whether you’re just a wear-a-scrunchie-at-home kind of gal and you can’t forget that Carrie Bradshaw once said no-one from New York would ever wear one or you’re going to be wearing velvet scrunchies for a nights out-out this autumn/winter, this is the perfect, minimal effort required sewing project for a Sunday afternoon ✂️

I saw the knee-length pleated skirt and shirt in the second picture in Age UK and although I wouldn’t have worn it as it was, I loved the Clueless pattern so I bought it to do a little upcycling. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sticking with the whole Clueless theme, I decided to make a mini dress. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Turning the shirt back to front, I cut out the strip of buttons on the shirt so the now centre back seam was open. I removed the sleeves, added bust darts and recut the neckline. I then cut the bottom off the shirt to the length I wanted (leaving a couple of centimetres for seam allowance). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For the skirt, I unpicked the waistband and the pleats. I then shaped the skirt using darts and cut up the back of the skirt so I could eventually have a zip up the back. To allow for the zip I made sure that the top of the darted skirt was a few centimetres bigger than I needed it for my waist measurement. I then reattached the waistband (which I adjusted to fit the top of the new darted skirt). I then stitched the top of the skirt to the hem of the top and inserted an invisible zip from the skirt all the way through the top. I then stitched up the seam under the zip and cut off the hem to make it the right length for short ol’ me! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m hoping to get filming more DIY’s so hopefully they’ll make more sense but in the meantime I have easy hand sewing fashion upcycling projects in my ‘TV DIY’ Instagram Highlights which can be completed whilst watching TV with a mojito in hand

A top with a little (lotta) stretch for lunch is always my friend... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have noticed that a lot of tops currently have a little stretch section which is so easy to replicate by replacing the normal thread in the bobbin of your machine with shirring elastic. I saw the oversized shirt dress in the 2nd picture in a Cancer Research charity shop & loved the stripes so decided to upcycle it into the comfiest top going. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I began by cutting the top and hem off the dress. I then cut vertically to remove the central button section & stitched these raw edges together so I ended up with a tube of fabric. I then folded the top and bottom of the tube of fabric under twice to hem both the top & bottom of the tube. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I wrapped the shirring elastic by hand, not stretching it as I wound the bobbin. With my brown thread at the top of the sewing machine (for the top stitching) & the elastic filled bobbin in the bobbin case, I started by stitching around my tube top close to the edge. I then repeated this process many times which each line of stitching being 1.5cm apart. The elastic in the bobbin makes the elastic gather the top in from the inside. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For the straps, I cut out two strips of fabric from the cut off hem of the dress. Each strip was about 10 cm so when I folded the strip in half lengthways and had a 1cm seam allowance, the width of each strap ended up as 4cm. To work out the length needed for my straps I put my tube top on and measured over my shoulder edge to edge. I then added a few inches to allow for the gathers. You can always cut straps shorter after gathered with elastic if too long. I began by stitching along one width and the length of the strap with normal thread in the bobbin (with the right sides of the fabric together). I then pushed the sewn end of the strip through the open end of the strip to turn the strip of fabric inside out. I then folded the raw edges of the straps in & slip stitched to conceal. With the elastic back in the bobbin I stitched to gather the straps. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The gathering for the top and straps takes a while but it’s so relaxing to sit & sew with a tea & TV ✂️

It was Pride last weekend and London was full of all the colours so when I saw this shirt in the men’s section of Fara it felt like the perfect time upcycle it into something a little different, into a top that I know I’m going to get a lot of wear out of. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I started by unpicking the sleeves. I then cut the top and hem off the shirt off. I shaped the front of the shirt with darts. I then cut the back section into 3 sections and stitched them back together so the back section became more fitted. I hemmed the tube bodice at the top & hem. I stitched the underarm of the sleeve back on and left the top of the sleeves loose. I sewed channels from the shoulder of the sleeve to where the sleeve meets the top. I threaded elastic through these channels to gather the shoulders. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now I just need the sun to keep shining so I can wear this top again & again!
