can I still practice while pregnant? the general rule of thumb is that if you’ve been doing something consistently and proficiently before pregnancy, then it’s okay to continue (with some new considerations) through term.
But what does that actually mean? For me, it means living that Prop Life to be fair, that’s not really anything too different for me but I do think it’s important to note that many of us still think of props as crutches or “modifications” - as some kind of down grade - but really, they’re just there to fill the space and provide a more steady physical & mental practice. Ashtangis tend to scoff at props, Iyengar students live by them... we’ve all got our biases but theres a beauty in practicality and in my opinion, props are a practical choice for nearly all practitioners in some way, shape, or form.
I’ve got naturally long arms for my height but even despite that, my ability to compress and step forward is null& void with this baby kangarooo hanging out on front, so what then? Make my arms magically longer! Add blocks. Bam, ape index improved
Can’t lay on your belly? Obviously. But a good solid bolster under your thighs means some prone postures are still available (and oh man does it feel good to even pretend to lay on my stomach right now.) become BFFs with your props, allow yourself step wider, step back instead of forward, squat instead of forward fold, create more space, stabilize and then mobilize.
Honestly, these are all just “normal”, all around tenants of Awakening Yoga but I’m so grateful to see from this side of the bump how they truly translate into different bodies and situations.
