❓what: an intracellular parasite whereby cats, mice and livestock appear to be the host of the parasite
.
how?: infestation can occur from:
- ingestion of under cooked meat
- ingestion of sporocysts from contamination when disposing of cat litter and this being transferred to food - transplacental spread which can occur to the foetus in a pregnant woman
.
▪️signs: - retinitis near an old scar can indicate reactivation
- papillitis can occur secondary to retinitis
.
tx: indicated if - leasion is threatening or involves macula, pap mac bundle, major bv, or optic nerve head
- very severe vitritis which can cause visual impairment and lead to a tractional r.d
- in AIDS px’s all lesions are treated

Dx: Suspected Cataracts associated with prolonged steroid use (Asthma)
Background: Theoretically one might explain that cataracts have been known to occur in patients using inhalers and other steroids
N.B. Px presented to a Community Ophthalmology Service. Px was referred to a more senior practitioner and onwards to the HES to have an ophthalmologist’s opinion but gave consent for the image of the affected eye to be used for teaching purposes and anonymised, they however will view the photo and post and if not satisfactory it will be deleted immediately.
