Funny how THE UNIVERSE WORKS. If you listen, you'll hear the language of LOVE. I had this video in my phone for months, maybe watched it 2-3 times, and never thought much about it other than "yeah, THAT happened." However...WHAT happened was BEAUTIFUL.
My nephew is #realteaching us of the power of giving ourselves the PERMISSION of FREEDOM and HONESTY to be ourselves and say...#fuckit.
CONTEXT: Its Christmas Eve at the Calderón residence which means pops is dominating the music playing merengue de los '60s, '70s y '80s.
Brycen decides to change the music... ...to Mario Techno. (Insert gasping emoji w/ a thought cloud above it w/ images of all the ass whoopings we got)
When WE were kids, this would've been equivalent to...you know what...I'm still scared to this day to even share what would've happened. Cion papi, no quiero problems.
Moving on...Brycen pressed play and quickly sat down as to almost hide HIS decision. He knew it was DIFFERENT, UNUSUAL, NONTRADITIONAL. Everyone stopped dancing and patiently waited for OUR choice of SOUND to play.
At first he was shy and caged his inner movement. Then, still shy, reserved and completely unsure of the outcome...in his own way...he said #fuckit.
LESSON: The room will always judge YOU for being YOU bc the room is filled with souls trying to be whatever they think the room wants them to be OR living a version of themselves that's ROOTED in FEAR.
ANOTHER LESSON: the voices heard speaking to Brycen are that of LOVE and ENCOURAGEMENT. Empower youth, they SHAPE WHO THEY ARE based off how we treat them.

I just love those days where you feel like a rockstar. Nothing can bring you down! The kids are learning! Birds sing when your class walks by. Admin gives you a compliment. ........today was not one of those days. Today was hard. I cried in the bathroom at lunch. I stayed until 7:30 and I was nowhere close to finished. I have to go to a training so I needed sub plans. And the list goes on and on.
And I share not to get sympathy but because I bet I'm not the only one. I bet someone needs to see that other teachers struggle. Someone needs to see that Instagram perfection is an unrealistic lie. Everyday isn't sunshine and rainbows with perfect lighting. Somedays suck. But you go back tomorrow and you try again. ----------------------------------------------------

Not everything goes according to plan. Not in life, not in school and not during this science lesson.

For some reason, our radish plants grew in the dark but not in our sunny windowsill! ♀️

This was a great opportunity to discuss that even though we know what should have happened, sometimes it doesn’t work out that way and that’s why we try things again and again before coming to a final conclusion. It was a learning experience for all!

What failure or mishap has happened in your classroom? Let’s be real so we know we’re not alone! #onekreativekindergarten #elementaryteacher #teacherlife #kindergarten #iteach #iteachtoo #teachersfollowteachers #teachermoments #realteaching #teachertribe
What can you do with boring and, often times, developmentally inappropriate curriculum?

Change it. We're the experts, remember? I know I certainly didn't get my MST just to nod and say yes to imposed curriculums. .

About the lesson: We're learning about the practice of researching, and displaying data graphically. Students came up with a survey question and collected data on a frequency table. Then they created a line plot, developed inferences, and shared their findings with the class.
It’s been the • MONDAYEST • Monday ever. I woke up late, my lessons didn’t go as planned, and my kiddos are starting a new unit soon. I felt defeated before my first class even ended - I felt like I was drowning. But by the end of the day, I picked myself back up because one good thing about teaching 3 of the same classes is that I got 2 new chances to redo the lesson. Teaching definitely isn’t always rainbows and sunshine, so when you hit that raincloud, keep walking until it has disappeared. ⛈ #realteaching
Not my idea. 2nd grader, Sofia reached her 100 days of the #OneOutfit100days challenge (before me since she did hers on weekends too) and although it was HER who deserved a gift of accomplishment, she decided to GIVE OTHERS a gift in honor of her final day. So much to learn from children. She just gave herself so much more reach. Those kids in her class will remember her action. They will make their own changes one day because she was a peer model for them. .
