Two weeks back, I went to a bubble tea shop and handed them my reusable cup. They hesitated for a bit, and the first thing they said was, “We can put it in here for you, but it wouldn’t look nice [as a photo for Instagram].” I couldn’t help but be a bit disappointed by how we’ve come this far into time, only to be trapped by something as intangible as social media. ——— Don’t get me wrong - social media is a GREAT tool. So many businesses thrive on this platform; we learn and discover SO MUCH from the Internet; you wouldn’t even be reading this if not for social media. But when is it too far? Are we allowing our desire for “success” - a curated Instagram feed or one great photo that people will forget - supersede our responsibility as caretakers of this beautiful thing called Earth? ——— If you think that the amount of single-use bubble tea cups is overwhelming, know that that is merely a small glimpse into an issue much bigger than what we think we know. I’d recommend you to get on YouTube and watch “50 Minutes to Save the World” by @amirzakeri, or @ourplanet on Netflix. ——— I do wish I could be better with managing the waste I produce - I always forget to ask for “NO STRAW” and I still love Kit Kats. ☹️ We’re each on our own journey to getting better at this. Just know that it’s not about being an absolute perfectionist (because that will only bring you so far) but about being mindful and doing what you can whenever you can. ——— It’s so easy to be blind to what’s happening to our world, when we’re privileged enough to see just one bubble tea cup and not an ocean full of plastic.
