I had watched several videos and read countless articles on how to cope with homesickness before I left because I had expected myself to be homesick most of the time in my host country and cry a whole lot. But that hasn't been true so far. Sure, I miss Diwali. I see my family together eating mithai and all I want is to be there. And, sure , I've had some days when I have just bawled my eyes out. But in the two months that I've been here, I've felt this certain contentment and peacefulness that I have never experienced before. I was going to a party at my friends house. I had the location on my phone, headphones in my ears and was navigating myself far away from where I was living, in a neighbourhood I had never visited before, in a country that wasn’t even mine. Just then my phone died. I was completely stranded far away from the train station, absolutely in the middle of nowhere. All I thought to myself was, "Oh well." Without thinking I blindly walked up to the closest house and knocked on the door saying, "Hey my phone is dead and I need to get somewhere so could I charge it here?" I was rethinking my decision asking my self why I just did what I did. I really thought the women would apologise get weirded out and say no. But this was Denmark. She invited me, let me charge my phone, showed me how to get there, I hung out with her son Oliver and played with their dog as well. “Before I went for exchange people kept telling me things like, ' You need to be careful, Mexico is a dangerous country with serious drug violence problems and sometimes things like 'Why are you going to Mexico? It's nothing more than a desert'. It wasn't until I was actually in Mexico I realised that people never told me about how beautiful Mexico is. They never told me about the magnificent Aztec pyramids of Teotihuacan or the marvellous Mayan city in Tulum and Chichen Itza. Neither did they tell me about the delicious Mexican cuisine which is more than just tacos and tequila. They did not mention how kind hearted the Mexicans are and how they will go an extra mile to help you out no matter what the problem. They all spoke about all the negative aspects of Mexico which I am sure every other country possesses as well but never told me about the beautiful Mexican culture. Nowadays we are so easily swayed by other people's misguided versions of the truth, that we completely forget to look beyond it. Exchange made me realise how important exploring is and how important it is to contruct your own version of reality.
