When ever we head out wide of the Island to the outer reefs we are surrounded by sharks, they are beautiful to watch in the water, so efficient in their movements and use of energy... They have survived for millions of years in an unforgiving environment where mistakes are not easily forgiven... Actively hunting and self regulating their numbers in dirrect relation to the numbers of fish that exist in the areas they move through, cleaning up the ocean of sick, injured and dying fish, keeping this fragile eco-system healthy... Unfortunalty this puts them in danger when they come into contact with many of the methods that humans use to catch/harvest fish... Many of the sharks we see have lines and lures trailing behind them, most have fish hooks in their mouths... Here is one of the sharks we saw this day that had a heavy trace trailing behind pulling on and slowly dislocating it's jaw... This shark was desperate to survive, every time we took a fish it would risk being hurt by swimming right up to us and nudging us with it's nose to try and get the fish... We tried several times, in many ways to remove the trace, I grabbed the shark trying to imobalise it by turning it upside down, but the shark would pannic and break free... Eventually I managed to swim with it for long enough to tie a double loop on the end of the thick mono trailing behind the heavy trace, then attaching a float line and float to it so that we could pull the shark to the boat and un-hook it... Unfortunatly although we got close the mono broke before we could secure the shark and so it swum back to the depths without the line but still trailing the heavy sinker and trace, which left us all feeling pretty flat! @aimritespearfishing #teamaimrite #rukubladesnz @oceanhunter.nz #freediving #spearfishing #itsnotallaboutshootingfish #selective #sustainable #respect #lovelife #sorry #shark

Awesome way to end my long weekend with a quick dive with my GF @seraeve. The south coast was flat and very fishy and @seraeve bagged her second ever butterfish and I nabbed a couple tasty bugs for dinner . . . #newzealand #spearfishing #lobster #crayfish #southcoast #wellington #freediving #diving #rukubladesnz #butterfish #spinyrocklobster #rukublades

Red Throat Emperor, known locally as “trumpeter” have to be one of my favourite fish to dive with and to selectively target... Depending on the conditions of the day and how you are presenting your body language, they can be the hardest and most clever fish to take, or just totally oblivious to the potential threat you might pose... Here on Norfolk Island they are prolific in numbers and as a result are the main fish targeted and used by local industry... Using traces with multiple hooks loaded up with fish baits the Red Throats are gluttons and it’s pretty common to have traces load up seconds after hitting the bottom. Unlike these methods of fishing diving on these fish requires a lot of work... If you want to take a good size fish, it usually requires several drops at depths from 17m-35m depending on the areas you are on the day... When you have found the fish you want to take you have to play the waiting game, appearing non threatening and possibly adding to your appeal by imitating feeding on the sand, coral or reef... It’s usually a good days diving if you are able to take five good Red Throat per diver... At the end of the day sharing the fish you took with family and friends is it’s own reward a delicious, versatile fish and the contentment in knowing that you took only what you needed leaving many more fish for another day. @aimritespearfishing #teamaimrite #aimrite #rukubladesnz @oceanhunter.nz #redthroatemperor #feedthefamily #islandlife #selective

To fully experience the present moment, the mind must be still... Then even if you are surrounded by an ocean of chaos right action happens on it’s own... leaving you, only as the observer of the play of life, as it is! @stuckonarockphoto @aimritespearfishing #teamaimrite #aimrite #vermillionwetsuit #rukubladesnz @oceanhunter.nz @aussiereels #getoutoftheway #experiencelifefully #now #meditation #freediving
