"When film is not a document, it is dream. That is why Tarkovsky is the greatest of them all. He moves with such naturalness in the room of dreams. He doesn't explain. What should he explain anyhow?" #IngmarBergman on #AndreiTarkovsky, #bornonthisday in 1932.⠀ ⠀ #Tarkovsky #Bergman #stalker #russiancinema #quote #birthday #quoteoftheday #botd #europeancinema #filmdirector

Showing Tonight, 4 April 8.15pm: The Sacrifice⠀ ⠀ "Tarkovsky’s final film is also one of his most overtly theatrical, a chamber drama drawn in characteristically virtuoso long takes. A philosopher celebrates his birthday by planting a tree with his young son on an otherwise barren landscape. Disgusted with modernity, he finds his calling after reports of an impending nuclear war, the reality of which remains occluded in dream. A yin-yang symbol emblazoned on the philosopher’s robe indicates the many structuring dualities of the film: personal crisis and public catastrophe, Christian atonement and pagan rites, redemption and madness, the hopefulness of a closing tribute to Tarkovsky’s son and the irrevocable vision of a life in flames. The film’s setting (the Baltic island of Gotland), cinematographer (Sven Nykvist), and leading actor (Erland Josephson) were all borrowed from Ingmar Bergman, but the central dwelling is of a piece with the many Russian dachas in Tarkovsky’s work – a final reconstruction pitched on the brink of destruction." – Harvard Film Archive⠀ ⠀ #thesacrifice #andreitarkovsky #tarkovsky #svennykvist #russiancinema #swedishcinema

Burnt by the Sun, 1994. #BurntbytheSun (Russian: Утомлённые солнцем) is a 1994 film by Russian director and screenwriter #NikitaMikhalkov and Azerbaijani screenwriter #RustamIbragimbekov. The film depicts the story of a senior #RedArmy officer, played by Mikhalkov, and his family during the Great Purge of the late 1930s in the Stalinist Soviet Union. It also stars #OlegMenshikov, Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė and Mikhalkov's daughter Nadezhda Mikhalkova. Nikita Mikhalkov stated in making the film, his belief was that "Bolshevism did not bring happiness to our country." However, he doubted whether "entire generations" could be judged for actions caused by wider social problems. #Mikhalkov also took inspiration from his young daughter Nadezhda Mikhalkova, and memories of his home. Azerbaijani screenwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov created the storyline with Mikhalkov and collaborated with him on the dialogue. The title derives from a popular 1930s song composed by Jerzy Petersburski. Originally the Polish tango, "To ostatnia niedziela" ("This is the last Sunday"), it became popular in the Soviet Union with new Russian lyrics and the title, "Утомлённое солнце" (Utomlyonnoye solntse, "Weary Sun"). The song is heard repeatedly in the film; the director Mikhalkov said in 2007 that he learned of the song from his elder brother #AndreiKonchalovsky's 1979film #Siberiade. He compared his use of the music to his having stolen money as a boy from his brother. According to Ibragimbekov, the "sun" depicted in the film is intended to symbolize #Stalin, and emphasized a point of the film is that totalitarian regimes take on a life of their own, destroying not only those whom they were originally intended to destroy but their creators as well. #sovietcinema #sovietmovie #sovietfilm #sovietunion #ussr #russiancinema #russianmovie #russianfilm #russia #cinema #movie #film #cultfilm #cultmovie #cinematography #photography #socialistrealism #socialism #communism

The Color of Pomegranates, 1969. One of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century, #SergeiParajanov's "#TheColorofPomegranates," (Armenian: #Նռանգույնը) a biography of the #Armenian troubadour #SayatNova (King of Song) reveals the poet's life more through his poetry than a conventional narration of important events in Sayat Nova's life. We see the poet grow up, fall in love, enter a monastery and die, but these incidents are depicted in the context of what are images from Sergei Parajanov's imagination and Sayat Nova's poems, poems that are seen and rarely heard. #SofikoChiaureli plays 6 roles, both male and female, and Sergei Parajanov writes, directs, edits, choreographs, works on costumes, design and decor and virtually every aspect of this revolutionary work. #sovietcinema #sovietmovie #sovietfilm #sovietunion #ussr #sovietclassics #cccp #russiancinema #russianmovie #russianfilm #russia #russianclassics #cinema #movie #film #cultfilm #cultmovie

Contract, 1985. Contract (Russian: Контракт) is a 1985 Soviet/Russian animation based on the short science fiction story Company Store (1958) by #RobertSilverberg and directed by #VladimirTarasov. A colonist arrives on a deserted #planet and is immediately attacked by various monsters. Moments before the colonist meets his death, a protective field is activated by the trading robot QBF-41. It turns out that the monsters are merely a ploy used by the #robot. Using the mass transmitter (a device that creates "everything necessary for life" for free), the colonist orders shaving razors which arrives at a huge shipping cost. It turns out that luxuries do not fall under the umbrella of the necessities of life. However QBF-41 offers a sample tube of shaving cream free of charge. The colonist asks to pay for it and it turns out he has no right to use the services of a competing firm. The robot also receives a similar warning and is deactivated. The colonist is then deprived from food and the mass transmitter. The colonist uses batteries from his life supplies to reactivate the robot, and together they are left alone on the surface of a lifeless planet. #sovietcinema #sovietmovie #sovietfilm #sovietunion #ussr #russiancinema #russianmovie #russianfilm #russia #cinema #movie #film #cultfilm #cultmovie #cinematography #photography #animation #socialistrealism #socialism #communism #animation #sovietanimation
