“ Epiphany “ , Bath taking at the Russian Orthodox Epiphany Day, in russian just called Kresheniye. At this day, it is said that all waters are holy. For three times you need to take a bath and your body and soul will be free of all evil things and health will come for the following year. As I watch this ceremony already for several years in Russia, I realized, it totally changed from the spontanous pure and simple hole in the ice to a massive organized event with police, life quards and security. So, I was happy to find such a location where you still feel this simple spiritual spirit. This shoot was taken exactly one year ago not far from Moscow. Fine Art Prints like this are available at my print shop on my site. #kresheniye #крещение #russiantraditions #russianfairytales #frankherfort #russianphotography #fineartprints #fineartphotography

Hi my dear friends! Today I will tell you how Russians celebrate birthdays. ⠀ For the first time I faced that the celebration of the birthday in Russia differs when I visited the birthday party in Argentina. It was good that I was told how to dress and so on otherwise I looked like a black sheep ⠀ First of all I’ll say that birthday boy or girl in Russian is called “именинник” (imenninik) or “виновник торжества” (vinovnik torzhestva) the man of the hour. ⠀ Birthday cake with candles is the most important part of the birthday party. It is a tradition that the man of the hour should make a wish and blow out all the candles on the cake in order this wish comes true. ⠀ As about the table. The table should be rich with a lot of different dishes. Prepare your stomachs for a lot of food☺️... As a rule different salads such as Olivie salad or Russian salad, salad with surimi sticks and many others, then hot dish, also fruits and the birthday cake. ⠀ Also there is a tradition to pull the birthday boy by the ears as many times as many years he turned. Prepare your ears, they will be burning... ⠀ Mostly Russian prefer to celebrate birthdays in a big way. Rich Russians rent clubs and organize different amusements. During the birthday party guests make toasts and clink glasses. ⠀ Guests should come with presents, it’s rude to come without any present. Nowadays it’s very fashionable and convenient to present gifts certificates. Also very often people just present money. ⠀ In any family it doesn’t matter rich or not people celebrate birthday cheerfully with music, dances, talks and from morning to night. ⠀ My dear friends and how do you usually celebrate your birthday? Frankly I do not like such celebrations at all. May be it looks unusual but I do not like to be the center of attention when everybody praises me, it makes me feel uncomfortable ... that is why I celebrate my birthday modestly, at home with my family and close friends.☺️ ⠀ I wish you all the best and have a good day! #russia #russian #russianlanguage #russiantraditions #birthday #russianbirthday #russianpeople #traditions #culture #russianculture #birthdayparty #katyalangs_russia

Today, many communities across Russia are gathering together in their local town squares to burn women - straw ones. Those straw dolls represent ‘Winter’, which is way too long in my country. People are so tired from cold, that they destroy these effigies to make a symbolic end to this tough season. ⠀ ⠀ This is the final day of Maslenitsa week — the oldest surviving Slavic holiday. It pulled through both Christianity and Soviet times. It is still very popular and 88% of people in Russia still celebrate it according to Public Opinion Research Center in 2018. ⠀ ⠀ Maslenitsa has its origins firmly entrenched in pagan tradition. In Slavic mythology, it is a sun-festival, personified by the ancient god Volos, and a celebration of the imminent end of the winter. The Church failed to get rid of it, so they adopted it in Christian practice and Maslenitsa is the last week before the onset of Great Lent. Maslenitsa was prohibited in Soviet Times as well as other religious activities, but people continued to celebrate it. ⠀ ⠀ During the week of Maslenitsa, meat is forbidden to Orthodox Christians, and it is the last week during which eggs, milk, cheese and other dairy products are permitted. This has lead to its name of "Cheese-fare week" or "Crepe week". The most characteristic food of Maslenitsa is bliny — thin pancakes or crepes, made from the rich foods still allowed by the Church that week. Also, Lent prohibits parties and other distractions from spiritual life. Maslenitsa is the last chance for Christians to have fun before sober and introspective Lenten season. ⠀ ⠀ Most people nowadays don’t care about church complications and simply enjoy pancakes and burning the dolls. I can understand the desire to symbolically destroy winter, but I never join this activity, as I’m concerned about burning women on a square, even straw ones. I do consume a couple of bliny though! ⠀ ⠀ For the illustration for this post I chose two of my old paintings in Tibet style. These are Red Tara and Guru Dragpur - 40x30 cm (15.7x11.8 in), tempera on board. Frankly they have no real connection to Maslenitsa, except they depict fire. Both paintings are still available for €177/$200 each.
