This is a fossilized Giant Sloth claw core. Giant sloths were massive elephant-sized sized mammals that lived in Florida thousands of years ago. Only a few land mammals exceeded their size. Imagine a massive hand full of these claws coming at you. Another discovery clip from last trip. This is a Columbian Mammoth molar I found sitting on a sandy section of river bottom. In North America during the ice age the Wooly Mammoth roamed north of North America while the Columbian Mammoth ranged more south in present day United States to as far south as Costa Rica.  It had long, curved tusks and four molars, which were replaced six times during the lifetime of an individual. When their teeth wore down they were replaced and a chunk would be spit out. They were capable of replacing their teeth 6 times during their life. Today we find their spit teeth and whole teeth like this fossilized. The closest living relative of the Columbian and other mammoths is the Asian elephant. For a few thousand years prior to their extinction, Columbian mammoths coexisted in North America with early humans who hunted them for food, used their bones for making tools, and depicted them in ancient art.
