#scribesaturday Part 2: The Process. swipe [I guess I should say: all the way to the end] I wanted to see how close I could get on my first try by scribing to this stone as carefully as possible using a good scribing tool. The stone was very textured so... the First try is not that close at all. I used the scribing tool from @fastcapllc and this funny double edge jigsaw blade from Spyder. Works decent in tight cuts. You can back up, but not productively when the saw is in orbital mode. I stay 1/8” away from the line. Then I set the table-saw shallower than the thickness of the material and ground out the back. If you are remotely uncomfortable with that idea, do NOT try it. Skip to the step of using the grinder with a 50 grit sanding disk on it. Cut to the line with the grinder. Back beveling the cut is critical to getting a tight fit. Test fit the piece. If the workpiece is 3/8” away from the stone, the places that touch need a mark scribed 3/8” away from that edge. I mark that by eye and then remove them with the grinder and repeat, hopefully requiring smaller and smaller increments. As you get closer, you can tap the board with a mallet and crush the high spots if the beveled edge is sharp enough. Resharpen those spots on the edge and crush them again. Go on and do it ‘til your satisfied.

If a level feature is cut in the wrong place, the workpiece has to be recut/slid over the depth of the mistake. Some of these features are so deep that a mistake like that could mean the board is garbage. The upper rock has a flat top and juts out quite far towards the window. But it does Not stick out far towards the room. The uncut board is also sitting pretty far from that particular stone. I couldn’t tell how much of the face of this stone would even break through the plane of the face of the trim board. So instead of trying to scribe that feature onto my board, I drew a level line lower than the top. That’s why the horizontal line appears to be way too low. That leaves more material that I can easily remove later, when some of the other features have been notched around and the board sets in a bit closer to the stone. That gives me a more accurate idea of where the top of that stone is. Same with the little nub below it. I left the material at that spot on the initial cut, and it’s a good thing because my initial scribeline at that little bump was wrong. Scribing to fit our floating shelves to the stone fireplace wall. - Scribe tool with the tip bent out to copy as much of the stone to the piece to be scribed. This was done on all three sides to be scribed. Top, face and bottom - Rough out close to the line while back cutting to take off as much material as you can with a jig saw and do less with the grinder - Grinder with backer pad and resin disc to shape and get closer to the lines. - Fit, and repeat steps until complete. - I wish I had gotten better video of the process but we were helping to finish this project and were able to squeeze it into the schedule so we were trying to get it done and working long hours. The video of the shelf fitting against the stone was not my final fit, but you can see the end photos to where it ended up - I have learned a lot from guys like @jchcabinets @aaronthomasaquinas and @tomohisajinno and this biggest one is the scribe tool with the bent tip which really helps register all the detail of the stone. SWIPE ▶️ and there’s audio if you care Some #carpentrytips for scribing to stone. This is from the project that shows up under the tag #scribedwindowtrim . This stage of scribing is admittedly rough. This is only to get the piece in the ballpark so that you can find the places it hits the stone and start taking off those spots a little at a time. (When I held this first attempt in place, it was mostly about 1/2” away- not even close) I make sure to leave extra material at deeper places such as joints in the stonework that are very deep. When in doubt, leave extra material. Something I didn’t mention in the third video is that I will purposefully tilt the scribe tool out of level at a deep horizontal feature such as a joint; pencil end slightly low at the bottom of a deep feature and pencil end slightly high at the top of a deep feature. This leaves more wood which you can always remove later. But if you hold it level and you are off (and I find that I am often off at those spots on the first pass) you will have cut out too much material and you will have a void. And that’s no fun.
