GOLDMANN TONOMETRY ▶️ ⠀⠀ Did you know this is the alternative to the “puff of air” test? Both give us intra-ocular pressure (IOP) measurements! ⠀⠀ With Goldmann applanation tonometry, an anesthetic eye drop is placed in the eye, as well as a yellow dye eye drop called fluroscein. ⠀⠀ A special disinfected probe is moved directly onto the eye ➡️ Your doctor uses the cobalt blue filter on the slit lamp to view two green semi-circles. S L I T L A M P ⠀⠀ This piece of equipment is essentially a microscope with some fancy lights and filters ⠀⠀ Instead of the traditional microscope set up, there is a place for the patient’s chin to rest, and the doctor’s eye pieces are parallel with the patient’s eyes! ✔️ ⠀⠀ Optometrists use the slit lamp to look at the different parts of the eye and assess their health! By moving the slit lamp back and forth, we can focus from the eyelashes, conjunctiva and cornea to all the way inside the eye on the anterior chamber and lens! We can even focus on the optic nerve at the back of the eye using a special lens 90D lens ⠀⠀ I’ve been practicing this week for my final practical, which is on an entire oculo-visual assessment and the “minimum database exam”!
