As businesses... there is an immense amount of pressure to appear “well liked” by the public.⁣ ⁣ But guess what... as @thebirdspapaya said in her post yesterday... ! And this announcement and testing feature by Instagram could not have come at a more perfect time...⁣ ⁣ Look. For an influencer-business exchange, I understand the value of metrics. But it doesn’t change how this little “” button is. It’s ironic for something that provokes so many mental health issues that its iconography is the symbol of love (❤️).⁣ ⁣ I don’t just like this idea of demolishing likes... !⁣ ⁣ Businesses will now have to partner with influencers based on the quality of marketing materials provided and if they actually like the person representing their brand.⁣ ⁣ Consumers will now have to buy product based on if its “for them” and not based on if it’s just popular.⁣ ⁣ And Influencers? Instagram has announced plans to test-run hiding the “like” counts this week as a way to make “a less pressurized environment” on the app. According to the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, “we want people to worry a little bit less about how many likes they’re getting on Instagram and spend a bit more time connecting with the people that they care about,” he said during the keynote of F8, Facebook’s annual software developer conference in San Jose, California. Under the test, the number of people who liked a post will no longer be shown. Users will be able to look at who liked their own post, but they won’t be able to see how many likes someone else’s post got unless they manually count them. A post’s creator will be able to see their own like counts if they choose to do so, Mosseri said. The hidden like count test announcement comes as Instagram expands its efforts to combat online bullying, a problem that plagues many of the app’s younger users.
