We’re growing in straw bales again this year! We learned a lot last year and have high hopes for our Tomato Tent and Green Tower Of Power this summer . We grow in straw for two main reasons, 1) it’s temporary (we don’t know what we’re going to do with these two areas long term or even next year); 2) the soil is terrible and is close to lead contaminated soil. . I wrote about the pros and cons of growing in straw as well as what plants did well/didn’t do well in a blog post this past October, link in bio for more details about that. . This year we are doing a couple things differently. We are using nitrogen heavy composted chicken manure on top of the bales; we have put free, salvaged coffee bags on the bales as a kind of mulch to retain moisture (the top dries out so fast we used way too much water last year); and we have drip lines on an automatic timer underneath the burlap that will be run for shorter times more frequently (vs lots of water once a day by hand which we did last year and was a total waste of water and fertilizer). I think these changes will make a big difference. We are growing tomatoes, gourds, squash, and beans on these, if all goes well they will look fantastic in a month or so. . These structures and beautiful, playful, and super functional! They also have magical energy. Last summer I had the ritual of sitting in the tent by myself for 5-10 minutes at the end of the day and it was THE BEST. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: trellises represent an opportunity for fun and whimsy in the garden. What’s vaseline, yellow containers got to do with gardening? Make your own aphid white fly traps. Take a yellow container (must be yellow) can be solo cup, pot plant container, seed tray, smear a thin layer of vaseline all over the side, then attach to a post close to where aphids and whitefly are. The yellow attracts them and they stick! Wipe off vaseline when need to and reapply. Cheap and easy!
