Day 8 ‘Nostalgia’ We have spoken before about how things remind us of particular people or certain times in our lives. The Sussex Trug in these photos belonged to my husband’s nan. A keen gardener, she grew a mix of flowers and vegetables and was completely self-taught like most of us are. Her garden was so pretty. The old tools belonged to my own Grandad, he was always outside pottering about and liked everything in neat and tidy rows. (He wouldn’t approve of my style of gardening at all!) A few days ago I visited the Thomas Smith trug workshop at Herstmonceux, Sussex. It's fantastic that this very regional craft is still going strong. Trugs are a type of basket made from steam bent chestnut and willow. They were tradtionally made in a whole range of sizes and shapes for farm use as they are strong and light. When farm mechanisation took over the company instead sold them to gardeners as they still do. I still can't quite bring myself to sully mine with mud yet so instead use it as a work basket.

So thrilled to pick up this beautiful trug when I was in Golden Bay. These are hand crafted out of aspen poplar with willow or hazel handles and rim.
