The Prague Astronomical Clock (Pražský orloj), made in 1410 by clockmakers Mikuláš of Kadaň and Jan Šindel, is the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still operating. It was formerly believed that it had been made by clockmaster Jan Růže (also called Hanuš), but it is now known to be historically inaccurate. Legend even had it that he was blinded on the order of the Prague Councillors so that he could not repeat his work. The clock mechanism has three main components: • the astronomical dial, representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky and displaying many astronomical details, including time, sunrise/sunset, and zodiac signs; • "The Walk of the Apostles", a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures, notably a figure of Death (represented by a skeleton) striking the time; • a calendar dial with medallions representing the months. The clock was repaired in 1552 and again many times in the following centuries, most recently in 2018, when the electric clock mechanism that was in operation since 1948 was replaced by an original mechanism from the 1860s. . I'll be in Prague until the end of March. Elephants are intricately associated with human life in India and assume a very special place in the religious as well as the day-to-day culture of Kerala. While some elephants are used for religious ceremonies in and around the temples, a few also work at timber yards. Almost all of the festivals in Kerala include at least one richly decorated elephant and carry the deity during annual festival processions in the temples. These Indian elephants are loved, revered, groomed and given a prestigious place in the state's culture. Not only this but elephants are important in Indian mythology too. Lord Ganesha - one of the most popular Indian deities and the Lord of Wisdom - bears an elephant head. The elephant head symbolizes great intellect and wisdom. The God of Gods Indra is believed to have a white elephant named Airavata as his vehicle . The Indian elephant is one of three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant and native to mainland Asia and has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List as the wild population has declined by at least 50% since the 1930s or three elephant generations. In general, Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants and have the highest body point on the head. The tip of their trunk has one finger-like process and have short or no tusks and of course Indian elephants have smaller ears ❤ ————————————————————— #India #IncredibleIndia #Elephant #Elephants #Kerala #tourist #yourshot_india #explore #unexplored #mythology #IndianElephant #exploreindia #traveltolearn #travelasia #asiatravel #paddingtonbear #paddington #abearcalledpaddington #travelingbear #backpackerstory #travelgram #itchyfeet #worldtraveler #instapassport #thosewhowander #wanderlust #traveladdict #letsgoeverywhere #travelplushie #plushiesofinstagram

Commercial production of tea in India began as an attempt by the British to break the Chinese monopoly on tea. The British East India Company took over large areas of land, that were then converted for mass tea production. Tea is a very popular drink in India, so much that 70% of the tea produced in India is consumed in India itself. There are a number of different states in India that produce tea, with Munnar being one of the most popular and beautiful tea plantation regions . All the leaves are handpicked either by hand (as the name implies) for the more delicate tea plants, or with the device you can see in photos below. Each woman must collect a minimum of 13kg of leaves a day, however the tea pickers usually collect between 100kg and 120kg of tea leaves a day. They get paid daily depending on how much they picked that day in kilos. The average salary of a tea picker is $8 a day . Munnar is a region in the hills of Kerala, famous for having some of the most elevated tea plantations in the world. Back in the day British colonials used to come to Munnar to escape the Indian heat, and it is still the perfect place to do so. High in the hills, the climate is considerably different from its surrounding low-lying regions. In Munnar you can relax while enjoying stunning views over the valleys and tea plantations, while enjoying cool weather and escaping the Indian heat. ❤☕ ————————————————————— #India #IncredibleIndia #Munnar #nature #Kerala #history #yourshot_india #keralagodsowncountry #teaplantation #tea #chai #exploreindia #traveltolearn #travelasia #asiatravel #paddingtonbear #paddington #abearcalledpaddington #travelingbear #backpackerstory #travelgram #itchyfeet #worldtraveler #instapassport #thosewhowander #wanderlust #traveladdict #letsgoeverywhere #travelplushie #plushiesofinstagram

Haji Lane is in the Kampong Glam neighborhood of Singapore and got its name because of there were many Arab pilgrim-brokers here who would arrange the Hajj for Muslims in Singapore and from the nearby islands such as Java. The shophouses of Haji were most commonly used as lodges for Hajj pilgrims whilst on their journeys. During their stay, the pilgrims would work close by as hawkers in order to save enough money to continue the rest of their journeys. During the 60s and 70s Haji lane provided shophouse homes for poorer Malay families. In the 80s there were basically just a lot of empty shophouses here. The ones that were occupied were used as storage spaces, so during this time the whole of Haji Lane area was totally dead . Today it's a buzzing, all-hours enclave, peppered with cool independent boutiques, bars, cafés and restaurants that rank high on the hip factor, not forgetting those beautiful murals. It’s no wonder people keep coming back to one of Singapore’s original indie neighborhoods ❤ ————————————————————— #Singapore #VisitSingapore #PassionMadePossible #sg #HajiLane #KampongGlam #travelasia #asiatravel #paddingtonbear #paddington #abearcalledpaddington #travelingbear #wheretonext #backpackerstory #wanderoften #thetraveltribe #lifeofadventure #itchyfeet #bucketlist #thetravelpro #worldtraveler #instapassport #thosewhowander #wanderlust #travelislife #traveladdict #postcardsfromtheworld #letsgoeverywhere #travelplushie #travelpassport

Good bye India you were quite the experience I wasn't expecting. Looking back over the last 2 months it would be easy to reflect on the positives, which most of my posts have been about, the architecture, the food, the countryside, the deserts, the animals, the beaches. What's more difficult to express are those things that grated on me being a westerner. The treatment of women, sometimes being objectified or ignored. The waste and the treatment of garbage which seems to be everywhere. The battle of the shop owners and the lack of or disregard of fixed/set pricing. Public hygiene, spitting, burping and weird noise making . Now don't get me wrong. Culture clashes are part of traveling and everyone will have a different experience. Most people have been amazing, helpful, honest out of their way friendly and wanted me to be safe and have the best experience ever . Of course there are good and there are bad people in every country and in a country of 1.4 billion you're going to run into quite a few of both. India made me thankful for everything I have and made me think about everything I took for granted. I'm leaving with those same mixed up thoughts and feelings as those when I arrived. Will I return? I might, I would like to explore the north and east, so watch out India, we're not done yet, but for now I need some clean laundry and clean streets and maybe some thing to eat that isn't curry . Any guessing where my next destination might be? ❤️ ————————————————————— #India #IncredibleIndia #cultureshock #travellife #yourshot_india #lifeofadventure #explore #wheretonext #lifeofadventure #exploreindia #traveltolearn #travelasia #asiatravel #paddingtonbear #paddington #abearcalledpaddington #travelingbear #backpackerstory #travelgram #itchyfeet #worldtraveler #instapassport #thosewhowander #wanderlust #travelpassport #travelislife #traveladdict #letsgoeverywhere #travelplushie #plushiesofinstagram

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting one of my Singaporean plushie friends @sirotan.sg who wore his very special spring bee mascot which was very fitting! What an amazing host! Sirotan took me to the famous Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore We were lucky enough to be up in the OCBC Skyway during the light and sound show which was incredible and beautiful. After the show Sirotan took me to Satay by the Bay for some amazing food and to sample some local sugarcane juice which was the perfect accompliment. Sirotan knows Singapore really well and told me so much about this facinating country, we soon became very good friends. #BFFs . Sirotan told me each Supertree is made up of four major components, a concrete core, a trunk, planting panels, and a canopy. Designed to resemble trees, they’re meant to function like them as well. Some are equipped with solar panels to store energy for the light show, while others are used as air exhaust receptacles to help cool the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. On top of that Sirotan told me they all collect rainwater for use in irrigation and fountain displays. Photosynthesis, cooling the air, and storing rainwater just like actual trees they actually serve a function that’s consistent with the city-state’s push to create lush environments, renewable energy and future sustainability. Singapore is the greenest city in Asia and these Supertrees are a fitting symbol . When day turns to night, the Supertrees come alive, just like a 70s disco during the light and sound show . Thank you So much Sirotan for a 'Supertree' evening. It was awesome to meet you and your host family in your home country. Until we meet again (in Hong Kong maybe?) ❤ ————————————————————— #Singapore #VisitSingapore #PassionMadePossible #sg #plushiemeetup #SupertreeGrove #travelasia #asiatravel #paddingtonbear #paddington #abearcalledpaddington #travelingbear #wheretonext #backpackerstory #wanderoften #lifeofadventure #itchyfeet #bucketlist #thetravelpro #worldtraveler #instapassport #thosewhowander #wanderlust #travelislife #traveladdict #postcardsfromtheworld #letsgoeverywhere #travelplushie #travelpassport

Hawker Culture is an integral part of life here in Singapore, people from all walks of life gather at hawker centres to dine and bond over their favorite food, which are prepared by hawkers. Over the years, this unique combination of food, space and community has evolved into a microcosm of Singapore’s multicultural society, with stalls selling Chinese, Malay, Indian and many other diverse types of dishes . Many of these hawker dishes originated from the food cultures of different immigrant groups who settled here. Over time, they have evolved to become the distinctive local dishes that are loved, and form an important part of food heritage. Hawker centres are spread across the island and serve as community dining rooms, they also moderate the cost of living and foster a common national identity based on shared experiences, values, and norms . The origins of Hawker Culture in Singapore can be traced back to the mid-1800s, when the first hawkers would ply the streets selling an array of food offerings. Back then, street hawkers took up the trade to earn a livelihood. It was a popular occupation among many early settlers as it required little capital and minimal skill. Up till the 1970s, street food stalls could still be seen in areas such as Chinatown and Orchard Road. They were popular gathering spaces, offering affordable meals such as laksa and satay to customers from all walks of life. From 1968 to 1986, the Government licensed and resettled street hawkers into purpose-built hawker centres and markets with proper sanitation and amenities. Today, there are more than 110 hawker centres across the island . So you like street food? ❤ ————————————————————— #Singapore #VisitSingapore #PassionMadePossible #sg #hawkers #streetfood #travelasia #asiatravel #paddingtonbear #paddington #abearcalledpaddington #travelingbear #wheretonext #backpackerstory #wanderoften #thetraveltribe #lifeofadventure #itchyfeet #bucketlist #thetravelpro #worldtraveler #instapassport #thosewhowander #wanderlust #travelislife #traveladdict #postcardsfromtheworld #letsgoeverywhere #travelplushie #travelpassport

Masjid Sultan or Sultan Mosque, is a mosque located within Kampong Glam, Singapore When Singapore was ceded to the British in 1819, Temenggong Abdul Rahman, the island's chief, and Sultan Hussain Shah of Johor, under whose jurisdiction Singapore fell, acquired small fortunes in exchange for their power. Sir Stamford Raffles also granted the Temenggong and the Sultan an annual stipend and the use of Kampong Glam for their residence . The area around Kampong Glam was also allocated for Malays and other Muslims. Hussain built a palace there and brought his family and a complete entourage from the Riau islands. Many of their followers came to Kampong Glam from the Riau Islands, Malacca and Sumatra . Sultan Hussain then decided to build a mosque befitting his status. He constructed a mosque next to his palace with funds from the East India Company. By the early 1900s, Singapore had become a centre for Islamic commerce, culture and art. Sultan Mosque soon became too small for this burgeoning community . The present mosque as you see it today was designed by Singapore’s oldest architectural firm and rebuilt in 1932. Interstingly, each dome base is decorated with glass bottle ends, donated by lower-income Muslims during its construction so that all Muslims, not just the rich, could contribute. North Bridge Road was actually forced to bend around the mosque as it was extended beyond Arab Street . The holy month of Ramadan is approaching which gives Muslims the opportunity to perform good deeds for the community, meet new people, and at the same time, develop a sense of fulfillment and gratitude. ————————————————————— #Singapore #VisitSingapore #PassionMadePossible #sg #MasjidSultan #Mosque #travelasia #asiatravel #paddingtonbear #paddington #abearcalledpaddington #travelingbear #wheretonext #backpackerstory #wanderoften #thetraveltribe #lifeofadventure #itchyfeet #bucketlist #thetravelpro #worldtraveler #instapassport #thosewhowander #wanderlust #travelislife #traveladdict #postcardsfromtheworld #letsgoeverywhere #travelplushie #travelpassport @MasjidSultan @visit_singapore
