I step out of the trees to the edge of the road. Helmet, night vision goggles, assault rifle. • It takes a second to realize that the sudden appearance in their usually tranquil neighborhood of a Navy SEAL in full battle gear has just scared the bejeezus out of the mom and dad strolling the sidewalk with their little kid. They take one look at me, grab their daughter, and run for their lives. • Uh-Oh. • Welcome to one of the US military’s big-ass war games, designed to simulate real world urban “contingencies”. Declared a “complete success” by its director, this particular training exercise was one of the most puzzling of my career. • To this day, I have no idea whether that family was part of an elaborate role-playing scenario, or just poor civilians uninformed that their backyards were suddenly crawling with special forces. • Even as my headset crackles, I look around, praying that no one in this town is packing a gun, or they might shoot us in self defense. • My report is cautious. When the ENTIRE military gets involved in something, there is no telling what might happen. • “Perimeter secure.” I snap out crisply.
