Lithuania’s most visited spot, Trakai Castle, is found in the only Historical National Park in Europe. The area is filled with forests, lakes, villages and islands making it a popular spot for sailing, paddle boating, swimming, SUP, hot air ballooning and kayaking. We opted for the latter two and enjoyed sunset under this pink sky. We passed this while heading to a cafe (also super cute - @augustasirbarboracafe has such a pretty interior!) on Stikliai gatvė. I didn’t realise until later that it was part of the #kulturosnaktis (Culture Night) installation! ✨ I think it’s a nice difference from the classic umbrellas - after all, you can do a hot air balloon ride over Vilnius Old Town or Trakai Island Castle we did one yesterday over Trakai at sunset [invited] and it was so awesome! Such an epic way to see the castle and what a unique experience to have thanks @tinggly and @oreivystescentras for the experience! Floating in a hot air balloon ...the original way to experience a birds eye view. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to take to the skies in Lithuania thanks to @tinggly. We gracefully drifted over the lakes of Trakai at sunset, which has now become my favourite spot in the Baltics. One thing that Vilnius doesn’t lack... churches! seriously, you can stand on almost any street and turn around and you’ll spot one or more ✨ The best known church in Vilnius is definitely the Cathedral, or the ‘Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus of Vilnius’, which stands in the (aptly named) Cathedral Square. Many of Vilnius’ churches were used as storage or other uses during the Soviet regime and the cathedral was used as a warehouse. ✨ However! This post is not about the cathedral St Anne’s Church is an iconic red brick Gothic church, located very close to the Užupis Republic. It’s considered one of the most interesting examples of Gothic architecture in Lithuania and I’ll think you’ll agree that it’s pretty impressive! ✨ It was consecrated in 1500 and was built for Anna, Grand Duchess of Lithuania, the wife of Vytautas the Great. The current brick church dates back to the late 15th century and is believed to have been designed by Benedikt Rejt, who also designed parts of Prague Castle! ✨ When Napoleon visited in 1812, he said he wanted to take the church back to Paris with him. Well, luckily for us, he didn’t (or couldn’t) so there the church is also close to Literatu gatvė (Literary Street) and @beigelistai, so perfect for getting a snack after wandering we visited as part of a walking tour with @freetourcom ‍♀️ ✨ Do you often do walking tours in cities? GUESS WHERE I’M GOING NEXT tomorrow morning I fly to a country that I’ve never been to before! @airbaltic is flying me to one of their 70+ destinations (Europe, Russia, CIS and Middle East) and I can’t wait to show this lesser known country to you guys ✨ Swipe right for a ‘before’ photo and then swipe to the last photo for a route map - the first three people to guess the correct destination will get a postcard from me happy guessing ✨ This is the beautiful view from Gediminas Tower, part of the castle that stood on this hill. There has been a castle on this spot since the early 15th century and it’s definitely a must visit! There is a funicular that takes you up to the castle or, if you’re feeling energetic, you can walk up. The funicular is €2 for both ways and then for this gorgeous view, you need to pay entry for the castle museum. You can get great views without climbing the castle tower though! (But my fave view is from the tower soooo ‍♀️ hehe).
