Timo Mayer's top Pinot Noir cuvée or "Close Planted" comes from a section of his Bloody Holl vineyard that is planted densely with 20 years old vines that are only 75cm from each other. The wine has a good proportion of whole cluster (40%) that is later blended back into the destemmed portion. Aged for 10 months in French Oak with roughly 30% being new before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Tasted in Mark Thomas and aired for 2 hours, the 2017 is cheery with initial dried red fruits and herbal aromas that evolves to smoky coffee. Tannins is still grippy due to its youth with sweet and bitter spices. Passionate about low intervention methods, Iole Rabasco inherited her family estate of vines and olive groves over 15 years ago. The 3.5 hectare property is located in in the village of Pianella, the heart of Abruzzo in eastern Italy. The majority of vines are 40+ years in age, the land has never been touched by chemicals. Vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically. Grapes are from vines in calcareous clay mixed with alluvial sediment and fossil remains. No added sulphur. The vineyard is located right next to the front gate of the house, from which the wine takes its name ‘Cancelli’ [meaning gate]. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. _ Aromas of hay, honey, pear, white flowers and an herbal trace. A silky texture accents subtle pear, apricot, green apple, white pepper and a vegetal streak glossed by citrus acidity. A floral trace lingers with fruit on the crisp, mineral driven finish. I really ought to drink more Riesling as it is perfect for the local weather and food, especially when it is made with skin-contact that makes the grape even more versatile when it comes to food pairing, such as this Austrain example from Zillinger. Numen is @johannes.zillinger non-intervention line. The Riesling is made from 30 years old biodynamic vines that is fermented on skin in Amphora and aged in steel before being bottled unfined, unfiltered with no SO2 addition. Tasted in Zalto Bordeaux, the 2017?needed some air to open up (in hindsight maybe I should have decanted this). There is plenty going on in the nose with citrus, white orchard fruits and herbal aromas. Energetic and salivating with zippy acidity that compliments the cool minerality. On this recent trip to Europe, I was lucky to try many gems from the Old World. Now that I am back, I think it is best to switch things up a little bit with some wines from the New World. First up is Chardonnay, a grape that I typically frown upon from the New World. I have however changed my perception having recently experience great wines from Sandhi and Kumeu River, so given that this is produced by the iconic Arnot Roberts, I was quite optimistic. The Watson Ranch is an organic steep single vineyard planted in 1993. Whole cluster pressed and aged in neutral oak. Tasted in Zalto Burgundy and decanted for an hour, the 2017 evoked ripe citrus aromas with sizzling acidity and plenty of spices. Alcohol is on the lower end at 12.4% but you can feel it a little bit as it is not in balance with the wine, this is probably due to it being very young. Recently I was fortunate enough to try the 2018 line up of @kindeliwines by Alex Criaghead from New Zealand (truthfully I am not a big fan of NZ wines but Kindeli is an exception). Whilst I did enjoyed nearly all of the wines (only the Blanco was a tad dull compare to the previous vintages), the best one at the moment is by far Otoño, which in 2018 is a blend of Gewürtztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. This is fermented with partial skin contact in amphorae, the wine is unfined, unfiltered with no SO2 addition. Tasted in Lehmann Jamesse and decanted for an hour. This was a true summer fruit bowl with citrus, orchard and tropical fruits aroma along with herbal and floral notes. Fresh and juicy with engaging acidity, the low 11.5% alcohol and low tannins (despite the skin contact) made it irresistible. I was smirking to myself along with every sips, that’s how good this is! Oh did I also forget to mention that is a damn good value wine too!? 1 Granazza Barbagia IGT 2016 is produced by Cantina Giuseppe Sedilesu in Mamoiada, Sardinia, Italy. The wine is produced with the native vine Granazza 100% (alcohol 13.5%). The color is straw yellow, the nose is fine with notes of apricot, peach and aromatic herbs. The taste is fresh, sapid, rich and creamy with good persistence and elegant. I decided to combine it with linguine with scampi, porcini mushrooms and bottarga that I prepared for dinner.
