This is near the end of an 8 hour scouting flight that started with a short leg to check out the Pass into Davos (snowy, as expected but doable on a good day- like today). 40km onto the flight it was clear it was a Hammertag day, those precious no wind fast climbs, epic pretty easy flying days that come around rarely. When they do, you bury the speed bar on every glide (the speed bar you control w your feet and when pressed it increased the angle of attack- which increases the speed of the glider) and you only turn in ripping strong lift. The game is distance. Fly fast. Today @reavis_soars and I got to see a ton of course line, got some great practice with staying below airspace that would end your race, and we’re reminded yet again, as we have been the last few days that have had such amazing flying weather- it’s going to be nasty if we can’t fly these passes! @roam @redbullxalps @garminoutdoor #virb @salewa @onnit #flyinghigh @patagonia @patagonia_surf

The only problem with today was that the chances of getting weather like this coming into what will undoubtedly be the hardest turnpoint on courseline is about zero. Very light wind, pretty stable low, but anytime you get to see and fly over terrain like this (Titlis turnpoint above Engleberg and the N face of the Eiger in the shots) is a huge, huge winner. Easily one of the most scenic flights I’ve ever flown. Having a blast w the team, trying to keep up w @reavis_soars on his Enzo as the days tick down. Oh and one more thing- if you don’t top land Titlis, which will be remarkably difficult if there’s wind in here, it’ll be 700+ meters of vertical snow. Yesterday after a week+ of pretty rotten flying weather the skies cleared, the wind mellowed and @reavis_soars got us in perfect position to see a large section of course line for the @redbullxalps I’ve never flown. Big confidence boost that was needed with less than two weeks to go. Feeling great about the gear, the team is dialed, the van is dialed, it’s time to take all the work of the past year (and the previous 2 races!) and put it all together and move fast. At one point in the flight I got tall over the massif that leads up to the Eiger, and could have flown directly over into the Rhône. Surrounded by snow, alone in a perfect sky, flying a line that Bruce had always had on his hit list. Wish you could have been there buddy, this race is for you.
