- WATCHET - The heart and soul of the town, Watchet Harbour in Somerset photographed earlier this year. Following public pressure the Watchet Harbour Act was passed in 1857 placing it under the control of commissioners. A new east pier was built with the west pier rebuilt in 1862 after being damaged by the so-called ‘Royal Charter’ storm of 1859. This meant larger vessels could enter the harbour than previously possible. This allowed shipping movements in the town to reach a peak of over 1100 per year. Harbour trade was aided considerably by the opening of two independent railways which terminated at Watchet in the mid 1860’s with the West Somerset Mineral Railway proving particularly important to the towns’ economy. Due to a terminal decline in the shipping of iron ore the harbour ceased commercial operations in 2000 and has now been converted to a picturesque marina for pleasure craft and yachts. Watchet is known for the local tradition of ‘Lantern Night’ which is held annually in the 16th September and involves children of the town carrying candle lanterns made from hollowed-out root vegetables such as Swede.
