I discovered yoga the summer of 2014 as I started training for my first NYC Marathon. I was an unsuspecting student, showing up to my first class in a baggy t-shirt and middle school gym shorts. I was terrified since I didn’t know what I was doing, keeping falling out of poses (what the heck is reverse warrior?) and dreading corrections from my teacher. She wore soft lavender scent and sang in savasana as I fidgeted uncomfortably on my borrowed mat, waiting for it all to end. . As we gear up for #InternationalDayOfYoga celebrations tomorrow and Saturday, I am reminded of why I started yoga in the first place. I do it because my on-the-mat practice teaches me things for my off-the-mat life. Yes, the long physical holds (we’ll get into a half-moon pose and hold it, and hold it, and then hold it some more) gives me improved strength and flexibility to complement my running. However, and more importantly, it is the exploration of the mental state in those 30-second holds that is so irreplaceable: What is beneath my endless thoughts? What are the stories my mind spins? Can I let go of them before they carry me down the river and drop me off at I’m-Furious-and-I-Don’t-Even-Know-Why Town? . Underneath all of that is where I can begin to find the unflappable me, the me that I strive to be, the me who inevitably gets knocked out of sorts daily, sometimes hourly, by the stuff of life. As Eckhart Tolle once said, “you do not become good by trying to be good…but by finding the goodness that is already within you and allowing that goodness to emerge.” _______________________ Join me and @lululemonnyc in tapping into this goodness by unrolling our mats together at Pier 64 @hudsonriverpark this Saturday, June 22nd.
