Yet another video has emerged of Moskvarium’s killer whales. Filmed during a performance in January 2018, the video shows 10-year-old Nord and 8-year-old Naja at the central slide-out area alongside two trainers. Both Nord and Naja are asked to slide onto the concrete surface and while Naja complies with this command Nord ignores it. Showing no interest in following his trainer’s commands, Nord turns his interest to Naja instead. His trainer slaps the water to try and regain control but his efforts are futile. Nord hauls up onto the slide-out and pushes into Naja who almost crushes her trainer against the slide-out wall. Fortunately, she’s able to react quickly and moves out of the way uninjured. Naja flails around, desperately trying to get off the slide-out, but Nord pushes her repeatedly to try and prevent her from entering the water. She eventually manages to escape and swims away as Nord chases after her. . This is the second time Nord has interrupted a performance to push Naja while she’s on a slide-out, an ultimately vulnerable position for an orca. Last time, in July 2017, Nord pushed Naja while she was on her side on the far larger main stage. She slid far away from the water’s edge and frantically struggled to get back in the water, even pulling her pectoral fin from under her body (which could’ve resulted in a severe injury) to position herself upright. While this incident is far less severe, it is now a reoccurring behaviour for Nord that appears to be an attempt for him to relieve his boredom at the expense of Naja. Captured from the wild in 2013, Nord is used to the everchanging conditions of the ocean and all of the opportunities it provides to intrigue the mind and stimulate the senses. In captivity, he’s confined to two small tanks completely devoid of any natural features, other than a few artificial rocks. He’s undoubtedly bored, as evident of the array of stereotypical behaviours he and his fellow tankmates participate in. However, while Nord may be trying to relieve his boredom, it never appears to be well received by Naja, who often panics and tries to escape from the situation immediately. .
