Ok y’all. My last saved #TacoCat post before I’m snuggling with her Tuesday night. I’m so grateful for this time spent in England with my mom, but I’m honestly ready to come home to my boys & my girl. Missing home life dearly, but telling myself to savor this time because it passes quickly! Winchester is everything I wanted Oxford to be! Simply majestical. . Today is a Jane Austen day! Seeing three Jane sites: her home/museum, her burial site, & her last home here where we are staying in Winchester. I’ve only read Pride & Prejudice, wishing I had read more prior to this trip, especially Emma which we are listening to in the car on audiobook. Which of these is your favorite?! Hi guys! As most of you know I’m studying towards a Masters Degree in Literary Studies. Today, I received my second set of results and I’m over the moon with them. The last few months have been some of the most challenging yet rewarding moments of my academic life. I’m going to take a week off from uni work and then it’s time to drive into my dissertation. - I’m currently finishing Where Angels Fear to Tread. It’s not my favourite book from Forester. Nor it is as accomplished as his later works. Nevertheless, it a good read. P.s. my windows aren’t dirty. The picture was taken early on a frosty morning. The Diary of A Nobody was written by brothers George and Weedon Grossmith and published as a book in 1892. The book is a diary, as is evident from the name and documents the daily life of an English clerk, Charles Pooter. His life is.... boring, but he is pretty happy with it, his wife, neighbors and job is his whole world, along with the everyday skirmishes with bunch of random people. Why should you read the diary of an unimportant person? For no other reason than to grin and occasionally laugh at his ideas about his own personality, his sense of humour where he often describes how people laugh at his jokes and how they admire him and daily incidents where he tries to make sense of all the eccentric people around him. The book is a diary, it’s a satire on everyday folks, don’t expect more from it and if you enjoy the dry deadpan English humour, this one is for you. I give it a ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5. Have you read it? Est-ce à cause du printemps ? Some of you asked if I read Jane Eyre for the first time, I guess wondering how I could skip this English classic that’s part of the school literature curriculum. So let me use this chance to give a bit of background to my literary education so far, especially if you are new to the blog and wondering why my posts appear in two languages. ⠀ I was born and bred in Kazakhstan, and therefore surrounded mostly by Russian and Soviet literature as I grew up. (There were classes in Kazakh literature as well, but my memories of those are quite hazy except for a few specific books, such as The Path of Abay which we kept talking about for a year). So if you study where I did, you’d become very closely acquainted with such names as Tolstoy, Pushkin, Lermontov, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Bulgakov amongst many - at quite an early age. Whether that’s a benefit to understanding them I’m not sure, but at least most of the population is covered with the knowledge of some basic facts from their masterpieces. ⠀ Russian education system, of course, pays attention to Western and Asian literature as well. However, quite selectively. I remember reading Dumas, Twain and Jack London, but that’s about it. Jane Austin doesn’t make it to the list, and Bronte sisters certainly do not either. Of course, you can imagine Orwell is not in the adapted Soviet curriculum, BUT Zamyatin is, so I’d say I have hopes for the future. ⠀ Back to Charlotte Bronte, whose writing I therefore discovered only as a woman approaching thirty, and therefore inescapably more sceptical and demanding. Remember I had my reservations about the main character in Rebecca, saying she was basically an annoying push-over? In Jane Eyre I finally found a female character that, despite societal expectations and unquestionably limited rights granted to women at the time, remains strong-willed, independent and fresh-thinking. Ahead of her time, and even ahead of the time we are currently living in - especially if we consider the ending. Having read the last few pages, I closed the book with deep satisfaction of how everything turned out. Proper happy ending, don’t you agree?⬇️⬇️⬇️

Jadi, total seumur hidup aku sampai detik ini , ini untuk ke-5 kalinya aku baca cerita yang ditulis oleh penulis asal Inggris, Lewis Carroll. Kali ini aku baca dari seri English Classics yang diterbitkan oleh @bukugpu Secara keseluruhan, seperti yang kita tahu, kisah Alice yang ditulis pada tahun 1865 ini bisa dibaca oleh semua umur. Meskipun ada bagian-bagian yang, memang absurd dan tidak mudah untuk benar-benar dipahami. Terlebih faktanya, dari informasi yang pernah aku baca, pada kisah petualangan Alice ini ternyata Lewis memang banyak mengangkat isu-isu politik pada masa itu, yang kemudian ia tuliskan dalam bentuk komedi satir. Dimana bagi yang tidak paham kondisi politik pada masa itu pasti hanya akan menganggapnya sebagai komedi biasa saja. Seperti aku ketika pertama kali membaca buku ini, yang bingung dengan beberapa dialog antar tokohnya Namun meskipun demikian, dengan petualangannya yang menghibur dan sosok Alice yang jujur, polos, dan pemberani ini bisa menjadi menjadi contoh baik bagi siapa saja, terutama anak-anak seumurannya. Hal lain yang patut diteladani dari karakter Alice, ia tidak pernah menunjukkan sikap jijik atau enggan pada setiap karakter aneh dan unik yang ditemuinya. Dari sini, secara implisit penulis mengajak pembacanya untuk: tidak menilai seseorang dari tampilan luar semata, bersikap terbuka terhadap perbedaan, dan menjunjung tinggi sopan santun Kalian yang sudah membaca buku ini, paling suka bagian yang mana?
