#MindfulMonday: Meet Queen, a Clydesdale born around 1993 who is a former work mare from an Amish farm in Ohio. She and her baby mule, Gizmo, along with Dolly and her baby mule, Gomez, were all rescued by #EquineAdvocates in 2001! Queen is relatively young and has recovered from a hind end injury that she had sustained while under the care of the neglectful farmer. Our first promo video is finally here and I’m so excited to share it with you ❤️ Thank you @manan.photo.films for this gorgeous video, it perfectly epitomises what The Backwater Sanctuary is about; love, happiness and freedom. Side note: I see a lot of social media posts on Earth Day today. Honestly though shouldn’t every day be Earth Day? We need a constant reminder that the only way forward is peaceful coexistence - with each other, with other animals and with this planet. Every time I’m in the city I try to watch as many videos/documentaries on horses as I possibly can before heading back to the jungle. There’s never enough you can learn about them, through your own experience and through the experiences of others. Watching the different yet, in a way, amazingly similar interactions between horse and man across the world is always intriguing. It’s also a brilliant feeling to know my intuitions on certain things re my horses are reflected in others all over. That reinforcement that the little things I do out of pure instinct and knowing my animals well enough, is actually how a lot of other horsey people work too - who knew? Can’t deny it’s always a relief to know you’re on the right track. At the end of the day, the language with horses and (the right/good) people everywhere is the same. ❤️

My gorgeous Hannibal. I’m so happy with the way he’s progressing now. I was a little worried at first, he wasn’t gaining weight as fast as I’d hoped (this picture was taken about a month into his rescue). But after getting his teeth rasped (thanks @khaki_adnan!), after a month’s course of stomach ulcer meds (when horses are starved for long periods of time, the acidity build up increases the risk of ulcers, which slows down weight gain), increased protein and amino acids in his diet with groundnut cake and sprouts, and with an entire field of fresh, gorgeous grass and hay every night, he’s looking much better! Swipe to see him and Zelda being gorgeous per usual ❤️ You’ll notice his ribs are less visible now, his glutes have come in nicely and he’s looking much rounder than before. His coat is also getting some shine, another sign of a healthy horse. A good improvement for just 6 months of rehabilitation. Zelda’s of course ruling the roost - she’s doing fantastic despite her recto-vaginal fistula. And Frodo is just too bloody adorable for words. The three of them make the cutest most lopsided herd we have and I just love them all to bits ❤️

Way back when it was just me and Bach ❤️ I’d spend hours sitting in my safari chair out on the grass in absolute awe of him. The sense of calm/comfort just being alone with your horse, it’s hard to describe in words. I have the deepest bond with this one, even though he’s kicked me more times than all the other horses put together. But if that’s not love, what is? ❤️

Hi lovelies. So sorry i haven’t been active the last few days - down and out with the flu and haven’t been able to make it back to camp yet. Still running a fever but I should be headin back sometime next week. It’s unbelievable how much I miss our babies. Just thought I’d give you a small update though - Abhi’s been fantastic and looking after them while I’ve been away. They’re all doing wonderfully. @shashankreddyphotography is also helping with feed etc (they’re a handful!) With the April showers the temperature has eased a little and they’re much happier. Meanwhile I’m currently working on a bunch of things in the city - I want to get our second sanctuary going so I’m looking at land options right now. We still have one vacant stable back at our current sanctuary, which I’m hoping to fill very soon. Will keep you posted on that once I finalise things. Frodo is still up for sponsorship, if anyone’s interested! I’m also working on something very special with @divine_nature_of_horses and @robinchukerbuti - Backwater Remedies! Essentially home-made, healthy, organic treats which also work as supplements for horses. We’ll be cooking up a concoction of organic ingredients and essential oils to make the best version of our treats which will hopefully help all horse owners everywhere! So I know I’ve been unusually quiet but just know the work never stops - please bare with me while I get this stuff done! Lots of love as always ❤️ (photo: the incredible @wherecarinagoes )

I often get calls from other parts of India about neglected/abandoned horses needing homes. There’s then disappointment from both ends when I say I can’t take them in. It’s not only heart breaking but also scary to know how many horses all over India need rescuing and it really bothers me that I can’t reach/help them all. There are very very few equine rescue initiatives here, nowhere close to what’s needed. Of course spreading awareness through this page is one thing but what after that? Backwater Remedies is one way I thought we could reach out to all horse owners as an easy way to better care for their animals but then I figured there’s you guys. If I can reach enough people, together we can come up with a simple system to help neglected equines all over. Whether it’s as simple as making sure they have access to food/clean water or even treating small wounds, I can help you help them. It doesn’t matter if they belong to someone else, there’s really no harm in lending a helping hand, especially if you see a need to. So from now onward, if you see a horse, pony or donkey that’s injured or neglected, take a picture, send it to me so I have an idea what we’re dealing with and then all I need is a few minutes of your time every day to give that animal the care it needs. I don’t see why we can’t get this going given the tech and resources we have today.
