........... I had a small 3hr window to source, track and hopefully get a photo of one of these finches in a whopping 28-square-kilometre area (no worries mate!, I’ve got this ).
Fortunately, with a little luck, a 5am start and some local knowledge, I managed to capture a few shots of these amazing creatures. It's certainly an unforgettable experience to sight a wheeling flock of these little beauties.

These colourful birds were once found across northern Australia, with an overall population in the millions. However, in recent decades the population has declined dramatically to an estimated 2,500 mature individuals. The main threats being predation, overgrazing and intense fire. They now occur in small flocks in a few locations in the Kimberley and the
NT.

The positive news is that there are a number of conservation and research efforts being carried out to hopefully reverse the decline of the Gouldian
Finch by implementing effective fire management (prescribed burning) and by removing feral herbivores......

BTW, did you know these birds occur naturally in three genetically distinct head colour morphs, Orange, Red and Black. Orange is rare (approx. 1 in
3000) whereas the black colour is most common (75%).....
