Another gem placed in the same collection (see previous post) is @mike_cockrill’s “Curtain Call” - 1995, oil on canvas. “Curtain Call” was the very first painting that gave birth to Cockrill’s (IMO) most iconic bodies of work “The Baby Doll Clown Killer Series”. Far from innocent or easy work (something Cockrill has never shied away from) , the underlying narratives at play in this body tackled some of the most gripping ethnocentric concerns. A Cockrill painting is seemingly timeless as the worlds narratives change but it’s story stays the same. Told in a different voice and context doomed to make the same mistakes. #mikecockrill #cockrill #clownkillers #ethnocentrism #humancondition
how many times can i say that #newyork #ny amazes me... before it gets old? maybe never ☺️ on a #ride around town... what do "i spy with my little eye" this banner **at a church!!!** something i'd never ever, in a trillion years, see back home in #wyomissing or #berkscounty, let alone at a religious institution there. growing up in wyomissing, berks county, i was a fairly mundane, garden-variety, sheltered "white girl." so, it wasn't until adulthood that i truly learned how staunchly invested the people of wyomissing and berks county are in their #racism, #homophobia, #ethnocentrism #xenophobia, etc. it wasn't until adulthood that i realized how intrinsic the #hate for "other" remains in the spirit of pennsylvania, how violence is a "sport" against "other." it's impossible for me not to be constantly mindful that my borough was founded by--literal--nazi supporters who kept consult--literally--with hitler, financially supported the essen munitions factor during ww2, and ran a bund disguised as the "social" iris club ♀️ but, we whitewash and pretend it away, because... it's easier than change and inclusion ♀️ meanwhile, yaaaaaa! for #hudson #hudsonvalley where i'm shocked and surprised time and again to experience and witness attitudes and actions supporting #equality #loveislove #humanrights. happy friday, y'all!

Recently I was invited to work with a team to develop a Racial Justice Workshop that adopts Storytelling as its primary pedagogical approach. Yesterday, at one of the meetings, my mind wandered as a colleague shared insights on how racism is perpetuated through stories. I began to think about my country, where racism isn’t really a problem (although this can be argued) but we are confronted daily by its equally evil cousin, Tribalism.
I remember how difficult it was for me to find a house to rent in Lagos. And how I had to act like I was Yoruba to secure a place because I was tired of agents telling me “We are sorry Sir, but the Landlord doesn’t want Igbo tenants”. I remember being curious as to why I never had an Igbo professor at both universities I attended in Lagos and when I asked questions I was told “Kachi, it’s almost impossible for an Igbo person to become a lecturer in Lagos, if you want to teach at a University, apply to schools in the east”. I also remember the mother of a lady I was seeing telling her (to my face) that she let her family down by dating an Igbo person. In her words “Even if you wanted to date an Igbo person, you couldn’t find one that was well to do?” Jollof Rice like me, being treated like white rice!! These are just a few of the numerous times I’ve been discriminated against because of my ethnic group and I’m far from the only one.
All across the country, people are being discriminated against because of their tribe. This tribalism is perpetuated through the stories we tell about different groups. The Igbo man telling his kids that the Yoruba man is lazy and dirty. The Yoruba man telling his kids that the Hausas are uneducated and uncivilized. The Hausa man telling his kids the Igbos are money thirsty ritualist. ♂️ Tribalism is the norm, overtly, shamelessly enacted across the country. It’s hurting our nation and slowing our progress but we’ll rather not talk about it.

Foundations of Behavior Management in a classroom setting - With the increasing numbers of culturally and linguistically #diverse children entering today’s classrooms, #teachers also need to understand the impact that #culture has on #behavior. Before they can understand the diverse cultures of their students, teachers first need to understand their own cultures and how their perceptions affect the ways in which they interact with students and students’ family members. Through authentic understanding of the various aspects of culture, teachers can develop culturally responsive behavior and classroom management programs.

borders and bureaucracy
are my enemies as of late
never could I have imagined
governments in control of my fate
closed borders & invisible walls
endless forms & impossible requests
so much out of my control
so confusing, such a mess
invisible lines designed
to keep 'others' out
as if we're not all equal
my faith becoming doubt
in a system that keeps failing me
built around status, class & race,
dividing us even further
forcing us to stay in our 'place'
when our so-called safety nets
have become so divisive
barricading the entrance
to anyone who looks different .
I'm sick of asking permission
to be with who I love
when the only thing stopping us
is the bureaucracy from above
it's a world of division
ethnocentrism and inequality
& until we open borders
we will never be truly free. .

*Also this has nothing to do with Ireland specifically, just a pretty photo to go along with my ranty poem
He is sweet like honey and I am like gula jawa (palm sugar)
He is white like milk and I am like chocolate
He is tall like spageti and I am like fettuccine
He eats breed and I eat rice
We are different but we can be together
We are different so we can complete each other
We are human and equal
If there is a reason to judge so there is a reason to respect
