We often don’t tell our stories because we’re ashamed of them. We’re ashamed of all the ways we think we fucked up. All the mistakes we made. All the many failures. And then we hope that no one ever finds out the truth because the truth would be devastating. But the funny thing is we all have stories that we’re ashamed of and the more we tell them the less shame there is for each of us. That is the beauty of this conversation with artist @carrieschmitt She tells her story. All of it. The parts that were hard and the parts that were beautiful. She talks about her decline into drinking and abusive relationships and a near-fatal illness. But she also talks about how she moved through it and got to the other side. And how she keeps moving through it and keeps getting to the other side. Because there will always be hard with the beautiful and the thing I love the most about my conversation with Carrie is her honesty around all of it. there are things we don’t talk about. we talk about how important it is to share our stuff online. to post what we’re making and to offer it up and do our best not to care what others think. but we don’t talk about how damn hard that is. social media is a tricky world to navigate because it’s based on the fundamental drive to belong. and when we’re driven by belonging then sharing who we are and what we make feels SO risky and vulnerable. it’s so tricky there’s actually a clinical term for it, “social media anxiety.” and I don’t have to say more because you know what I’m talking about but we do need a place where we are all free to say more and to say what’s real. this living room (which is not my living room but I wish it was) is where I see us sitting and sharing and talking about the hard and the beautiful and the beautiful inside the hard. where we share what we need so that we can make what we love. and give that. even when it feels risky and vulnerable. photo and living room belong to: @anneeeck link to the Collective in bio
