The striped pattern of zebra is unique to each individual, much like a human fingerprint. The purpose of the stripes has been debated for years. The idea that it makes individuals difficult to see within the herd and protects against predators is interesting but animals that display this kind of ‘crypsis’ are usually quiet and inclined to hide as well, whereas zebra are noisy, frequently traverse open terrain and herd quite loosely which rather negates the theory. Other explanations for the stripes include social recognition between individuals, heat regulation and some experimental evidence that suggests that biting flies are confused by the markings and discouraged from attacking.
